Couples Compatibility Challenge
Using my previously published compatibility checklist, I’d like to extend a challenge to anyone reading: to write about couples you like and show how they check off the points on the checklist.
Here’s an example, using one of my pairings - Niles Crane and Daphne Moon from Fraser:
1. MBTI:
Niles; INFJ (Ni-Fe-Ti-Se) DAPHNE: ENTJ (Te-Ni-Se-Fi)
Functions in common; Ni/Se. Opposite functions; Fe/Fi, Te/Ti. Niles and Daphne share the same ability to rely on gut-intuition and imagination, while still having suppressed impulsive sides. They clash emotions-wise - a people pleaser and an individualist, internal logic vs external logic. But their shared functions keep them on the level.
2. GENDER
Niles: Male, Straight, Feminine Yin (Sensitive Guy)
Daphne: Female, Straight, Masculine Yang (Tomboy)
Niles is a particularly feminine male character, even compared to his brother Frasier. Daphne is very tomboyish, often playing the “husband” role in the relationship, especially during her pregnancy.
3. MORALITY
Niles: Lawful Good. Daphne: Social Good.
Both characters are good and moral; Niles is extreemly committed to his ethics and by-the-book rules, while Daphne is a bit more flexible but still mostly lawful.
4. TEMPERAMENT
Niles: Melancholic (Sadness) Daphne: Sanguine (Joy). These are pretty evident - sorrowful, serious Niles and joyful, optimistic Daphne create that great contrast.
5. ZODIAC
Niles: Virgo (Mutable Earth) Daphne: Pisces (Mutable Water). Niles is practical, down-to-earth and meticulous; he’s practically a walking Virgo stereotype. Daphne is dreamy, vague and at times a skilled manipulator - Pisces by the book.
6. NAMES
Shared Letters; N, E. Syllables: 1/2 (niles, daphne) Portmanteau: Daphniles.
7. HUMOR & TEMPER
Humor: Insult humor (both) Temper: Slow-burn (both). Both characters derive their humor through sharp digs at other people; neither character angers quickly.
8. BETTY/VERONICA
Niles: Betty to Joe & Donny’s Veronica. Daphne; Veronica to Maris & Mel’s Betty.
9. FAMILY
Niles: Small but loving Crane family. Daphne: Big but distant Moon family. Daphne gets along much better with Niles’ family than she does with her own, even before she started dating him. She’s a bit of a lost lamb with a lot of family issues, who moved halfway across the world partially to get away from them. She needs the Cranes, Niles or no Niles.
10. BIRTH ORDER
Niles: Youngest. Daphne: MIddle child, oldest mentality. Daphne has an oldest child mentality - the traditional dominant mixed with easy-going. Niles is a youngest son both literally and in personality.
11. PARALLELS
Both grew up in the shadow of siblings, both have testy relationships with their parent of the same gender, both have had rather tepid love lives, both have medical careers.
12. HOBBIES
Both like ‘the finer things’ in life, though for different reasons - they’re shown going to a ballet together, although Daphne is more interested in the posing men than the music.
13. AGES
Niles. Born 1957. Daphne - Born 1961. Four year age gap; meet at age 36 & 32. 1/2 Niles age + 7=25. Well in range.
14. JOBS
Niles. Psychiatrist. Daphne: Physical therapist. Same line, different jobs.
15. ATTRACTION
Niles. 5′9, slim build, square face, lidded eyes. Married Maris, notoriously slim and fit. Daphne: 5′10 (1 inch difference), slim build, square face, lidded eyes. Similar features, thus assortative mating process.
16. ESSENTIAL NEED
Niles - Journey is about detatching from an upper-class but emotionally closed off lifestyle, thus needing a woman both lower-class and classy. Daphne - journey of self-acceptance and self-confidence, thus man she considers out of her league (class lines) makes the perfect match.
What couples do you think are compatible? Let me know.
