Norwegian Wood Locations - Shinjuku, Tokyo (1960s / 70s) To understand the visuals of Norwegian Wood, I gathered imagery of some of the prime locations mentioned in the book, researching the streets that Naoko and Watanabe may have walked through - as the two walking together is somewhat significant to Watanabe’s memories.  Above is the location of Shinjuku, one of the most famous places in Tokyo today and a prime hotspot for tourists. With its neon signs and bright lights, Shinjuku is a prime area for shopping and city life. Watanabe also visits here with his friend Nagasawa, a womanising extrovert who is idolised by many.

COMPETITION BRIEF

Animal Farm

I decided to look at George Orwell’s Animal farm as my competition brief because i like the message of the book that is no matter how hard we try to create equality there will always be some who take advantage and come out on top. this message has lead most book covers to be based around political leaders such as Stalin and Trump.

Naheul Bardi - 2017 Penguin Book Cover Entries

The Penguin Covers competition is annual, so to gain a feel of successful book covers for Penguin I looked at 2017 entries created by Naheul Bardi. Bardi has gone with a duotone, risograph finish for In Cold Blood and To Kill a Mockingbird. https://www.behance.net/gallery/55945203/book-covers

Passport Design & Aesthetic As part of research towards the xChange festival, in which Kate has requested the programme be in the form of a passport -with relations to Brexit and how this will affect women in particular. To ensure authenticity, I have begun looking into the illustrations and colours that appear on passports as these could serve as a background to our programme - and perhaps could incorporate different colours depending on the strand of the festival as there are 3 categories that events will fall under. As a group we have settled on the colours red and blue as these work well in a risography style and tie in to the theme of Brexit, however a third colour has not yet been decided by the team. Additionally, we could look into creating relevant illustrations and imagery for the background of the passport through the pages, perhaps also incorporating a foil block for the cover of the passport - again for authenticity.
