What a powerful card, I must say. Judgement typically shows itself as the moment of enlightenment. It’s the moment in which someone answers their higher calling. It also goes back to self reflection, identity, awakening to your purpose, rebirth, and big decisions.

As a card that represents your life, judgement operates as a sort of omen that you are destined for something greater spiritually. You’re likely very in touch with your spirituality and your identity in regards to spirituality. You’re not one to ignore the call to change. You know that changes will come to you and that’s a good thing.

Self reflection is likely a well used tool in your toolbox. You know when to step back and reflect on who you are, what you want, and what you’re going to do next. This isn’t the same isolating self reflection of the hermit, but rather a focus on yourself that doesn’t take away from your ability to be with others. There’s a different sort of balance.

Month of Spreads, Oct 5

Today's prompt was about money, and was centered around the Ace of Pentacles (literally). This spread instructed me to find the two cards around the Ace of Pentacles, and then shuffle the deck and pull one more card.

I started the reading knowing my deck was shuffled because I'd shuffled it for a while before deciding to use a different deck for last night's reading. I found the Ace of Pentacles at the very top of my deck (I'd flipped it over to see the cards as i leafed through them, so I didn't have to draw all the cards one-by-one. which means the Ace was the second to last card I came across. I pulled out the two cards around it, a pair of 8s, (of Wands and Cups, in that order) but the reading already felt wrong. I put everything back and did the shuffling today instead of relying on yesterday's shuffle, but I remembered the 8s in case they flavored the actual reading.

What I pulled the second time was The King of Wands, The Fool, and The King of Swords. That's a weighty answer to any question: a major arcana and two court cards, so obviously I dug deeper to see what they were actually saying.

The questions these are supposed to answer are:

where do my financial problems reside?

how can I solve this issue?

where should my focus be to start making money?

The King of Wands answers the first question, "where do my troubles reside?" by suggesting that I might be too goal-driven and neglecting relationships with people. The card wasn't reversed, but a reversal would suggest that the problem is me making rash/impulsive decisions or having unrealistically high expectations. All of the above are reasonable answers so I'll come back to this after reading the other cards.

The Fool tries to answer the second question, "how can I solve the issue identified in the previous question?" Without having confidently identified the issue, the Fool still suggests humility or a fresh start, perhaps also spontaneity or creativity. It's also a card that my deck gives me when it wants me to really listen to an answer, so I'm not sure how much this is answering the question and how much is it emphasizing the other answers.

The King of Swords offers this advice on where I should focus to start making money: the way forward is logical or I should use my intellect to pursue money. Or really, in context of my job, I should apply what I've learned to continue doing my job well because that's a reliable source of income. It might also be advice to treat debt as seriously as I know it is, or to think more seriously before I make impulse purchases. There's lots of possible meanings. However, The Fool seems to be saying that spontaneity isn't my problem, so probably more of the earlier meanings.

Coming back to The King of Wands, it sounds like my issue is in my attitude more than anything else with money problems. I need to make sure I'm not valuing money more than the people I share life with. Money is a stress, yes, but not the primary goal I should be working toward.

Do the 8s I pulled at the beginning affect the reading at all? Well, The Eight of Wands suggests that the rapid changes recently in my life might be affecting my misplaced goals. And The Eight of Cups reinforces The Fool in suggesting I should start a new journey and reinforces the Wands in saying the journey should be in pursuit of something more rewarding than physical possessions.

As I observed the other day, tarot is really good at telling us hard truths. In my case today, it's reminding me that money is tight but not really a worry in my household right now. My priorities should be elsewhere.

Month of Spreads, Oct 3

Okay. attempt number two because my wife needed to borrow my phone so I saved my half-written-up reading to drafts and let her have it... and then it's not in my drafts now that I have my phone back.

this will be short and sweet, because it's late and I'm discouraged, but I've done the reading more thoroughly in real life.

The spread today was all about self-improvement. two of the questions were suggested with the prompt: "how do i develop self-awareness" and "how do i develop clarity" and one was left up to my choosing. I chose "how can I learn to better support my friends and family". It's been a rough day for me and all my roommates I think.

For a variety of reasons, (including my wife's continuing need to borrow my phone, reducing my ability to look things up, and the idea that self-improvement/personal development should have deep roots and long-lasting effects, which, in a mixed reading, the major arcana tend to represent more than the minor), I chose to use only the major arcana in this reading.

Also, given that each question was a full question on its own, this felt more like three one-card readings pulled at once more than a three-card reading. Even so, I pulled all three cards at once.

For self-acceptance, I got The World.

For clarity, I got Judgment. At a glance, I thought Judgment would be more thematically suited to self-awareness, but after a little more thought I realized that Judgment relies on already having self-awareness, so those cards aren't automatically backwards for the questions they're answering.

For how do I support others more effectively, I drew The High Priestess.

Considering both Judgment and The World showed up in my reading yesterday, I chose to interpret these cards in reverse order because The High Priestess hasn't shown up in one of my readings in a long time and I'm less familiar with her. I wanted to approach the card with as little bias as possible.

The keywords-summary in my tarot reference, before going into more detail, said The High Priestess represents intuition and the unconscious mind, or alternately, mystery. Using the first couple of words, this card would suggest I already know how to support people as they need it, if I would just listen to my intuition. As encouraging as that is, I wasn't sure that was really the meaning of this card in a question about how to grow. I read further. Other possible readings of this card focus on listening to your dreams or otherwise meditating to access your subconscious. That's something I do rarely and I don't think I could do without proper guidance. Focusing intent for spellcraft? sure. listening to my cards or other divination tools while I have the attention to listen? definitely. listening to the nonverbal parts of my subconscious? I have no idea where to start. So that's potentially an area in which to grow but it's not really practical right now. and I'm already seeing why I rarely get this card in personal readings whoops. Or this card could potentially mean i need to get in touch with my feminine side but as an afab enby I find that a very uncomfortable suggestion. Yes, I'm thoroughly in the process of breaking away from internalized misogyny (or whatever the appropriate phrase is for an enby but i still tend to feel allied with women and other gender minorities against cis men so...??) and like yes I am still finding the right balance of how much I can embrace femininity without my gender being erased, but also I'm not sure how my difficult relationship with gender affects supporting people. Yet another possible interpretation is just that my life is changing and I'm uncertain in things which, yes true, but also how does that help me support people? So anyway there's a lot of relevant possibilities here and I'm still working out the intended meaning.

Moving on so I finish this reading tonight instead of just arguing with the High Priestess... Judgment as advice for how do I gain clarity. Actually, Judgment was reversed, and the keywords-summary of this card comments on the failure of self-awareness. The slightly longer explanation suggests that I'm too distracted by self-doubt and that I'm too busy for self-reflection and those are both getting in my way. Welp. That actually helps a little with the previous card. I need to learn to actually do self-reflection in order to reap the benefits of my intuition.

Finally, The World as advice for how to improve my self-awareness (which seems to be the theme of this spread, I'm pleasantly surprised that it turned out to be a coherent reading after all.) The World is actually also reversed, so it suggests that I need to face challenges (in self-reflection) and not try to find the quick but incomplete solution. it also suggests I need to persevere through frustrations.

so, interpreting the cards in order, I have suggestions for how to improve self-awareness, the suggestion that i can improve clarity in my life by improving self-awareness, and the advice that I already know how to support the people i care about once i learn to listen to my intuition.

That's... hard but helpful. probably. I'll give the advice a little time to settle in before I decide.
