whenever u rb that post about languages i get the urge to send u more about the languages i hear and love <3 first of all, that person who said Danish was ugly?? this weekend we had a big family party, and my Danish cousins flew over. hearing them speak to each other was so nice, it sounded gentle and calm. the 7 year old taught me the words for ice and snow, which i've now forgotten (oops!) but they sounded like variations on the word "ice" which i just thought was lovely.
i watched a documentary recently where a Kawésqar woman spoke (in Kawésqar) about her journey through parts of patagonia when she was younger. I can't find the exact clip, but https://youtu.be/z6gtyuAC2Bc is a clip from the same film where she and two other indigenous chileans from the south say words in their own languages, starting at about 2:11. if you are in the right place to hear about some really horrible things (about the dictatorship and about colonisation), i'd recommend the whole documentary, and the trilogy it's a part of, because they are poetic and expressive in a way i never knew documentaries could be, and because they deal with subjects like memory, of which language is a vital part.
I also watched another documentary, this time from Brazil. it was very short, just 6 minutes long, about the efforts to preserve the Manoki language, which is close to dying off. I can't find online the version that i watched, which had english subtitles, but it was called "the spirits just understand our language" or "os espiritos só entendem o nosso idioma"
i think that the lengths people will go to to preserve and learn their own languages just proves how beautiful all languages are, because they're part of our culture and our connection to our past. anyway i'm sort of rambling, but i am always thinking about languages and it's nice to be able to tell someone about what i've come across.
glad you're interested in maltese! i've been listening to that song you posted quite often. they're in the square just outside the gates to valletta, so i've been there probably about 15 times. it's nice to feel a connection to my culture that i can associate with my real life, so thank you.
HI!!!! love this ask so so much omg thank you for sending it to me
teaching and being taught foreign words is one of life’s greatest joys imo. especially when it’s little kids cause it’s such a cute little bonding moment <33 i love that
thank you sooo much for the recommendations i will def check those two out cause they sound fascinating!! seeing people fight to preserve their native language is so heartbreaking to me, bc it’s such an important part of culture. when you lose a language you lose sm of the history and the legends and just the connection to who you are and what you come from and it’s so devastating. but you’re right that the length ppl go to in order to avoid that just shows how important it is and how much value there is in every language, even ones that are not widely spoken
so glad you liked the song!! i think it’s really beautiful and it’s so special that you can connect it to your actual life <3 that sounds amazing
thank you thank you for sharing this with me and you can always come talk to me abt the language or anything i’d be delighted
