longform opinions to thwart the average blogger below
i joke about being aligned with anarcho-primitivism because IHS explores it, but I'm more aligned with post-development and decolonial theory. i may post through national democratic perspectives but i'm not affiliated with any orgs at the moment. also i dabble in ecology and environmental studies so that informs my stuff too.
fandom promotes reactionary behavior. what started as support for transformative work and artists has metastasized into ideals that align with anti-intellectualism and imperialist consumerism. in other words, bigotry is tolerated under the guise of fiction being separate and without material influence on reality.
for example, using censorship as a shield to justify fetishizing racism, pedophilia, incest, and other taboo. the overall zeitgeist right now is "transgression" through edginess— it's all vice signalling to look cooler. while i agree that complex, challenging, and "dark" topics should not be censored, they are not immune from criticism and do not exist in a vacuum.
Another example I'm vehemently against is the commodification in fandom, where fan artist merch depends on large-scale exploitative production in the Global South, especially in plastics. I have seen sustainable business models, especially in textiles, but it is not the norm.
i'm not interested in settler colonial definitions of being transgender. this doesn't mean that i think transgenderism is a Western concept invading the rest of the world either. [I am transmisogyny exempt.] I agree that transmisogyny is rampant everywhere and I believe it is in part because of colonialism.
What I disagree with is the current trend that brands gender nonconformity and nonbinary identities as "the wrong kind of transgender", which mostly aligns with the aging ideas of transmedicalism. more importantly, it neglects to acknowledge access to HRT and gender affirming care in the Global South.
hence i am adapting the term "Anonymized Global South" from the Mardoll debacle as a representation of white trans people benefiting from Whiteness. Whiteness is used as the reactionary unifying factor against in the rising transphobia in the West, at the expense of everyone else.
I believe in the value of different worldviews and perspectives but I also believe in blocking liberally.
Semi related ive been integrating lines that resemble wood panels in my simon says stuff because of obvious reasons. but also wanna do it overall. Heres one Not Art piece that ive used wood before and obviously going for the filipino native coding here. And for the forseeable future youll see it more as a motif for that reason
The composition choices for Simon and Spencer are self explanatory. The 9 is emphemeral and doesnt completely materially exist, but its still sharp and casts a shadow. The top half is meant to be the swarm of insects but i was too lazy to add detail anyway. The two of them, aside from being locked in a death spiral, probably shows more wacky perspective tricks, like the award figuratively aimed at Spencer's throat. They glare at the viewer to acknowledge the meta aspect, that this is how they interpret fandom through the lens of the show, which is basically people reaching their limits and being driven to violence etc...
Gavin is more complicated... Im trying to practice hiding things in plain sight better but its not fun to dumb it down to an audience. But yes, he's LITERALLY in the margins, his contributions literally blocked and distorted by a glass ceiling wall. In obvious, violent terms, hes been brutalized Repetitively and erased from the power struggle between the other two. There's also the "bottom-up co-opting of counterculture" aspect, since he wrote much of the material used in Simon's scheme. I think they made a point that he's aware of this when he blackmails Spencer again, pointing out how he would spin it as a creator stealing an unknown fan's hard work... deracializing in the process to victimize himself.
Gavin is also upside down to resemble the hanged man tarot card, which was my initial thought until i needed to balance the composition by putting him in the margins. It has many interpretations tbh, and I haven't done a proper reading in months, but I generally wanted to interpret his role as a sacrifice. Also the theme of the show in general, where the characters cannot progress without a violent change.
A composition ive been wanting to do to express how i feel is my voyeuristic self glaring down multiple layers of windows. Framing myself as the outside, the biased viewer... a mixed bag of emotion. Disgust, yearning, wonder, just something vague enough to register based on how someone sees it
