Potting shed, a screened room, some compost bins, just before the first big rain of the season. The new post at the center of the photo is to keep me from falling down as I turn the corner. This has been a year in which there has been a plague of rodents. Rats, mice and voles. Voles are the biggest problem. They are not deterred by any of the things that bother other rodents, the females can have five litters a year, and they can kill trees by eating the bark below the ground. But I have to admit they are cute little pests. Their population occasionally spikes and then subsides for a number of years.

Saturday 11th August: Spent the day clearing space for 3 old tile crates that we were given to use as compost bins.

We cleared the space, moved the crates in place and used chicken wire inside each crate to ensure the contents stays in place!

I then transferred the contents of a large open compost pile and 2 plastic bins worth of compost into them.

Very happy with the results and should hopefully mean we can more and better compost.

That ragged top on this pine tree is damage from a wind shear (locally nicknamed Hurricane Elvis) that happened back in 2003. The original top of the tree was twisted off and dropped onto my patio. My patio furniture did not survive and I didn’t have power for a month. I’m using the first person here because this happened back when my wife and I were still dating:
