July 2026: Friday Before The Fourth
A gecko trapped in a orb weaver's web. I didn't think this was possible given the relative size of predator & prey:
Our kale got ravaged by cabbage white caterpillars so I gave it a severe cut back. The caterpillars & leaves they infested were drowned in water & added to the compost:
When your echinacea blossoms start fading like this, you might be tempted to dead head them. In our experience, it is better to leave them alone. The second flush of blossoms are never that impressive and, if you leave them be, the flowers will make seed that the birds, especially goldfinches, will love more than sunflowers:
Friday's cucumber harvest:
The star of Friday dinner - New York strip steaks:
Not to brag but these are some really nice green beans. This is the sixth basket we’ve picked so far from our garden. We blanch them then vacuum seal them, we will get enough to last us until next season.
My first cucumber harvest! The buckets are working well so far!
🥕 THE GARDEN BESTIES GUIDE 🥕
Stop planting in isolation and start building a community. 🌿✨ Just like us, plants have 'best friends' that help them thrive, ward off pests, and even make them taste better. This is the ultimate cheat sheet for your summer garden glow-up.
Imagine your Tomatoes hanging out with some Basil and Garlic for that built-in flavor profile, or your Carrots vibing with Onions and Rosemary to keep the vibes (and the bugs) in check. 🍅🧄 It’s all about creating an ecosystem that works together so you can work less. Whether you’re a pro with a backyard plot or just starting your first raised bed, companion planting is the secret sauce to a high-yield, low-stress harvest. 🌻🦋
Let’s turn that dirt into a masterpiece. Which duo are you planting first? 🌿🥂
Save this for your next trip to the nursery! Reblog to help a fellow gardener out and follow for more slow-living and green-thumb energy. 🕊️✨
Intruder Alert!! by Debbie Meader Via Flickr: Flash, Jr., our resident male Anna's Hummingbird, paused sipping nectar, as another Hummingbird had flown into our backyard! He was immediately on it, and chased the intruder out of our yard. Photo taken in our backyard in Camas, Washington.
Inspired by @adventuresofalgy I went out to check my backyard rhubarb. Lo and behold, there was a baby dragon under the leaves!
