Compton Hill Reservoir Park: Picnic #19

Date: Saturday, October 4th, 2014

Park assessment: Reservoir Park is a pretty fabulous park. It has a lake, public art, tennis courts, a playground, a dog park, and the historic water tower. All of this coexists with functional fresh water infrastructure in a wonderful way.

Picnic assessment: We chose this park on this particular day because the water tower was open to the public, as it is once or twice every month. We started our picnic off with a trip up the tower where you can see wonderful views in all directions. The reservoir is located at this site because of its location on top of a hill. When you add the additional height of the water tower, it is one of the tallest places in the entire city. I highly recommend a trip up the water tower if you can handle a few hundred steps and the $5 admission fee.

Pertinent research and facts: There is tons of information on the history of this park, and I will not get into the details here since it is covered so well in other places.

One fact I would like to draw attention to is that a large swath along the north side was demolished in order to build highway 44 in approximately 1969. It’s hard to think sometimes that the highways were not always there, but then remnants of the city before the highways appear. On the northeast corner of the reservoir you can walk down a majestic stone staircase that deadends at the highway with cars buzzing by 20 feet away. The highways ate away large chunks of some of our best parks across the entire city.

Discrepancies with the city’s info: The city lists the size of the park as 35 acres, but a large chunk of this is unusable as a park visitor since it is taken up by the enormous reservoirs located in the center of the park.

Park recommendations:  The tennis courts could use some love.

Nappability: Great place to take a nap. Plenty of shade and soft grass.

Nearby features: The Shaw neighborhood and South Grand are nearby with restaurants etc. I wish there were more restaurants closer to the park. Jack in the Box is the closest place to get a bite to eat.

Fellow Park People: There were lots of people in the park to go up the water tower as well as walkers and joggers.

Access:  #70 Grand bus, #8 Russell bus

Mixed Use Building in Compton Heights Restored (2901 Shenandoah)

The mixed use building at 2901 Shenandoah (at Nebraska) in the Compton Heights neighborhood has been restored at a cost of $275,000. The owner, Washateria LLC, has opened a laundromat business of the same name on the ground floor.
