Can somebody please explain how this is OK?
As an European I simply don't get this. I spent large amounts of my life in Spain, which is The Bars Country, waiters everywhere. There's literally a bar (understood as a low-cost family-friendly place to drink or eat throughout the day and evening) every few meters, waiters and waitresses are the main export. And there are no problems in Spain about tips because guess what? Being a waiter is a FULL-TIME JOB. It's regulated by law, so they make at the very least 10-20€ per hour and often more, plus tips. Bosses are expected to take care of their team, paying them legally and decently, including medical leave and holidays, and ensuring they are safe in the workplace, and tips are normally like 3-20€ (depending on the level of luxury of the place and how much work people feel they've put the waiters for), because they're just supposed to be a little extra to acknowledge specially good service. The cue is in the name: tip, not salary.
So why the fuck is the US making people feel wrong for not paying fat-ass tips instead of complaining their bosses don't pay their team properly???!!!!
