By simply selecting File, Get Info (Command + I), the Get Info dialog box appears, and it has a sub–tab for comments: Any file or folder can have comments attached to it. And, in "Details" view – you can see your comments, alongside the file/folder name, and date modified, etc. I like this feature, even though I tend to use "Column" view, more than "Details" view, in the Finder.

Recently, I mentioned how I was looking for an alternative to PowerPoint, and figured the anwser lie in Apple’s Keynote. Upon reflection, and further reading... I realized I am being slightly foolish. Microsoft’s Office applications are extremely powerful programs, that help run millions of businesses across the globe, as well as provide superior products for "at home," personal computers. For me to actually believe that Apple will simply create a program overnight, and have it be better than programs that have been around (and worked) for over a decade, is just plain foolish. You can’t just "out step" PowerPoint’s versatility. You can’t duplicate Excel’s incredible "ease of use," combined with serious programming capabilities. And you can’t just create a program called Pages, and expect millions of Word users to take notice. It doesn’t happen like that, and I sure don’t want it to. It’s all about using the right tool for the job. And there is no sense in "fixing it if it’s not broken."

Bad PC = no Photoshop

It’s simple. I just want a file, from home, to exist on my PC, here at work. I have the 151 MB Photoshop CS file on a USB Jump Drive, so all I have to do is save it to the hard drive, and use it. Simple, right? Not quite. Many problems have come up. Where should I begin? First, I tried physical methods:

My CD–ROM drive is not working, so I can’t bring the file on a CD.

I am using Windows 98, so my computer will not recognize the USB Jump Drive, so I can’t use a USB Jump Drive.

My computer at work also has a 100 MB Zip Drive (old school, yeh), but the file I need is 151 MB.

Next, I tried virtual methods:

My Windows 98 PC has a problem while trying to connect to our network server. It keeps prompting for a password, even though there is no password known to anyone here. Unfortunately, I am one of the only ones still using Windows 98 (not by choice, heavens no), and everyone else has 2000 or XP, which gives them no trouble when connecting to the server.

My iDisk account with .Mac is slower than ever. For example, I arrived at work this morning at 7:30 AM, and started to upload the file (on a different computer) to my iDisk account. At 11:45 AM, it was finally done uploading. Now... I have to DOWNLOAD it onto MY machine, which will take another four hours.

And all I need is Photoshop CS, so I can continue with my work. I guess that’s too much to ask. Wednesday has been a complete waste. UPDATE (02/23/2005; 12:26 PM PDT): Photoshop CS won’t even run on Windows 98. In fact, the only Photoshop that I could (safely) install on my PC here is version 6. I should have read the system requirements first.

‘Yahoo Music Unlimited’ is limited

I’d really like to try Yahoo Music Unlimited - but Yahoo doesn’t seem to want me to. For one thing, you can only access the service using Internet Explorer 6. On a PC. And not on an iPod. Am I missing something here? I use a Mac at home, and I use Firefox for browsing - on my Mac and Windows. I never use Internet Explorer - except for testing CSS development scenarios. So... at work (where I use Windows), I’d like to try this service out - but I couldn’t possibly use Internet Explorer 6 - the God-awful browser, both security-wise, and feature-wise. If you’re Yahoo, why would you target only PC users, utilizing Internet Explorer? And why would you shut out the millions of iPod owners? This service looks pretty good, and I’m always open for change. iTunes is great, but I’m only using it because it’s the best service currently available. I can’t wait for when (not IF) something else comes along. But Yahoo is shutting me out, so what can I do?
