i guess one of the good things about knowing basic (and i mean basic) computers is you know a scam when you hear one.
I knew it immediately because of the all ‘0′ phone number, but answered anyway for shits and giggles. And if that hadn’t been a big tip off, the guys excuse would have been. He said he was from microsoft, and that my computer was throwing up malware warnings. 1)microsoft won’t ever call you for something like that- you gotta contact them if you have a virus. 2) even if they did, i don’t have a warrenty with them or anything that would cause them to care.
so i told him to buzz off, and i know this is a scam, but he just kept talking (i think it might have been a computer recording, cause of weird pauses and such). and he just KEPT TALKING and wanted me to do a run command. For those of you that don’t know, you can hold down the windows key and the r key at the same time, and it lets you enter commands and open functions and such.
he wanted me to type in a command that i recognized, which is remote control, allowing him to control my computer from far away, lock me out of it, and take everything from files to passwords.
i actually instead typed the command into google, and looked it up to see how common this scam is, and apparently it’s been happening A LOT lately. i played along for a little bit, like i had typed in the command and everything, till i couldn’t play along anymore cause he was asking to many questions. He eventually asked, “what do you see on the screen now, what is it telling you?” and i just responded with “it’s telling me this is a fucking scam”. and i hung up.
Like, i knew it was a scam from start to finish, and treated it as such, but what about the people who aren’t aware of this? like i’m thinking of my grandpa who doesn’t really know how computers work, and is still figuring out texting. fucking sucks.

Heads up, kids
I just got a call from someone named “Tony” from a call center who claimed to be Microsoft technical support and also with some geek group claiming my computer is being hacked even though I don’t know it by Russians via Koreans. Or maybe Koreans via Russians because he kind of waffled on that later in the conversation…And he was very concerned about it and how it’s slowing down my computer.
And as he’s saying all of this, I’m googling and reading about how this is a popular scam and how Microsoft doesn’t call their customers like this. Ever.
So after a few minutes of run around with “Tony” I asked for his number to call him back at a better time (which he was deeply concerned about because apparently it’s the Cold War and I’m making us lose this war and it could have major implications in a vague and scary way he could not actually seem to pinpoint).
Big surprise that “Tony” gave me an 888 number that’s not associated with Microsoft. Bigger surprise that when I googled the number, others received the same call, some of which gave out the payment and then realized later it was a scam, one claims files on his computer were deleted as he was going through the process w the hacker.
Just to be 100% sure, I called Microsoft’s legit number from their website and spoke to a very nice, legit tech who confirmed that Microsoft does NOT contact customers via cold calls. So yeah, watch out for this scam.
