so it's come to my attention that a lot of people just don't know how to optimize their computer experience - whether they're scared of screwing things up irreparably or just unaware the options exist! I work in tech support so here are my basics (mainly Windows):
you got a new computer: great! first thing you're gonna do is look at your pre-installed programs to remove or replace
norton antivirus - replace: this is technically speaking an antivirus but in my experience it's utterly useless in doing anything except popping up at inconvenient times and blocking you from downloading other antivirus applications (I personally tend to refer to it as preinstalled malware), uninstall it and replace it with avast antivirus
microsoft edge/internet explorer - replace: you can't delete this one without going into regedit but you CAN turn it off in the control panel via "turn Windows features on or off" microsoft edge and internet explorer both are notoriously slow and very very good at attracting malware and viruses, I suggest replacing this one with firefox (when it asks, click the button that makes firefox or whatever you choose your default browser)
cortana/copilot or other ai assistant - remove: this one is trickier and requires going into regedit to remove entirely but they are preinstalled spyware so here is a link to steps on how to disable these
in addition to removing and replacing the above listed I also suggest installing ccleaner to ensure your computer doesn't get cluttered with temporary files and runs more smoothly
congratulations! you're ready to use your computer! <3333
I found a tech tip flow chart that annoyed me enough to make my own

Thank you for attending my TED talk.
it's my personal belief, that when browsing the internet, the middle click should be used infinitely more than the right click.
need to open something in a new tab? middle click it. i use that on youtube and it personally pains me to see people go through the right click menu every time to open a video in a new tab.
hell, most right click features have easy-to-remember hotkeys.
need to open a new tab? → ctrl+t.
need to reopen the previously closed tab? → ctrl+shift+t.
need to close a tab? → ctrl+w.
need to close a window? → ctrl+shift+w.
need to open a new window? → ctrl+n.
need to open a new incognito/private window? you get the pattern.
i can't remember the last time i've right clicked when browsing the internet ever since i learned of the middle click meta, like, 5 years ago. and now you do too.
If you, like me, have Windows 11 and hate the "upgraded" right-click menus because the tiiiiny copy/paste/etc logos they decided to use instead of text are hard to see and tell apart, THERE IS A SOLUTION 🎉
You're just a quick registry edit away from restoring the original, legible legacy context menus!

Does anyone have tips for getting a new laptop? I desperately need one for college, and I wanna avoid Chromebook cause idk if I’ll need to use heavy programs (I plan to major in environmental sciences, and that can take LOTS of forms), also I don’t wanna get fucked over by updates degrading the computer or search engines eating my damn space (I think that’s smth i can do simply by using Firefox tho)
Hp is a no no bc ✨boycott✨ but is dell still in the table? Also I know windows can be annoying bc of updates and other stuff
I’ve read some articles here and there but from what I’ve seen tumblr has a good grasp of What Laptop Just Works Without So Many Damn Bells and Whistles ™️ and that’s what I need
Budget is max $700, but preferably cheap bc I don’t have a steady income, again I just need smth that works well enough that lets me Do Things
I genuinely don’t know what direction to go, please help me tech side of tumblr
