So I just saw a post by a random personal blog that said “don’t follow me if we never even had a conversation before” and?????? Not to be rude but literally what the fuck??????????

I’ve had people (non-pornbots) try to strike conversation out of nowhere in my DMs recently, and now I’m wondering if they were doing that because they wanted to follow me and thought they needed to interact first. I feel compelled to say, just in case, that it’s totally okay to follow this blog (or my side blog, for that matter) even if we’ve never talked before.

Also, I’m legit confused. Is this how follow culture works right now? It was worded like it’s common sense but is that really a thing?

Saw a sharp increase in my follower count after posting this. The legitimacy of it is driving me nuts so I also feel the need to say that you can follow anyone on here regardless of whether you’ve interacted with them or not. People like the above mentioned blog are exceptions. Perhaps they themselves think they aren’t and therefore will act like they aren’t, but they are, trust me.

Just follow anyone you wanna follow. The worst thing that can happen is maybe getting soft-blocked by the other person, but if they do soft-block you, then they were never that worth following in the first place.

You don't want to get mistaken for a bot! Most follow-bots don't do anything but lurk (not sure what the point of them is tbh), but I've heard some will wait a couple weeks & then spam all their followed pages' inboxes with porn. So I block them & report as spam. 🤷‍♀️

In case anyone hasn't heard, the cyclospora outbreak affecting tons of people in the US right now is coming from Taylor Farms produce. Best to stay away from bagged lettuce and prepared salads completely right now, but especially the ones mentioned in the screenshot:

Taylor Farms Earthbound Farms Little Salad Bar (Aldi) Marketside (Walmart) Kroger House Brand Target private label greens Costco salads and greens etc Trader Joe's chopped salad kits and fresh produce Fast food: McDonalds, Taco Bell, (Yum! Brands), Chipotle, Subway, Pizza Hut, KFC, Olive Garden, Top Golf, Red Lobster, Burger King, etc.

This is not the first time I've heard about a Taylor Farms foodborne illness outbreak. I stopped eating their salads after reading a description of the conditions in their facilities. Doesn't sound like they've improved anything.

We need a fully funded and staffed FDA, and regulations with teeth - and that's exactly what we don't have under Trump. To make things worse, the CDC is no longer tracking these outbreaks. We're on our own.

Outbreak is considered to have started 1 May, I was laid off on the 27th. That would do it.

HEB-branded greens also come from Taylor. Simple Truth Organic is also a Taylor brand sold exclusively through the Kroger conglomerate.

As much as many people truly do want to help out of purely kindness, I do understand Red's possible motivation.

For a long time, especially in US history, providing for yourself as much as possible was expected, in part because it required so much effort. House chores took most of the day when you had livestock to tend, water had to be carried in from rivers or outdoor water pumps, clothing was all handmade and hand mended, cooking sometimes meant you started preparing dinner at the same time as breakfast, and going to the store required hitching up a horse and riding an hour or more into town (assuming you had horses and didn't have to walk).

Everything was so difficult then, that a token of appreciation or bartering was customary because asking someone else a favor was putting substantial hardship onto them. You were asking them to share time and resources that were already rare and precious.

As industrialization grew, the mindset didn't really change. Men were supposed to be out working and providing for their families, women were supposed to be maintaining the home and the children, and if either person failed to do that it was seen as a social faux pas because you were capable of doing your part, and instead you were putting undo hardship on others for your own convenience or comfort.

Too many adults these days grew up in families that were themselves raised with this mindset. One or both parents too proud to ask for help because they feel like it means they're failing.

In these cases, I find it best to accept the payment, even if it feels awkward, and say something like "Thank you. I enjoy helping, not out of charity, but because I think helping each other makes our whole community stronger. I'm always happy to help, no strings or judgment attached."

This won't change anything overnight. You're fighting against a deep-rooted pride wound that's likely 30+ years old. But over time you might start to make change.

Alternatively, some people will hold favors against you w/the intent to make you "pay up" later. If you're used to favors being "banked" against you like this, making sure you're "even" at time of parting cuts it off at the knees.

I guess I’m on the New York side of the internet but I feel like every single person in NYC has made a post complaining about the air quality. The smoke from the Ontario fires in particular is traveling east and as far south as North Carolina. Really sobering thing to think about and my thoughts are with the people on the ground in Ontario trying to contain it and advocating for more stringent fire control measures.

Look. I understand that people are concerned about training models. I really do get that, that people have intense feelings about their photos or drawings or image being used to train AI. I even kind of get wanting to weaponize copyright against that because you don't know what else to do with those feelings.

I am currently building a multi-decade chain of papers on computer vision and image generation to have this discussion, and I would like to do so in a moderately calm manner.

Unfortunately if I want to cite a journal article from 1983 in a tumblr post, the copyright holders of this article about image restoration and pixel randomization want $248 per section of excerpted text (<500 words).

So the calm has now gone away.

to anyone in the areas impacted by the wildfire smoke, my #1 biggest piece of advice as someone whos been dealing with wildfire smoke in the NW united states for years, is build yourself a Corsi-Rosenthal Cube

they perform as well as expensive HEPA air cleaners, and are comparatively VERY inexpensive. all you need is a box fan, 4 air filters, a piece of cardboard, and some duct tape!!!!

i think it took us maybe a half hour to put ours together, if that, and we replace the filters every 3 months. it's really made a HUGE difference, both when the air quality is bad, but also with our allergies

where i am, a box fan and the filters run about $20 each, so if $100 is too much of a stretch at the moment, get the fan and one filter. tape the filter to the intake side of the fan, all the way around. this is also good if your space is small and a 20" cube won't fit.
