Why Many Computer Users Don't Build Their Own Computers
Friend-A
Several years ago a gamer friend of mine came to me needing his computer repaired. The system's network controller failed, and I warned him that the system would fail. That it was only a matter of time. I connected a USB WiFi adapter to the computer allowing him to connect to the Internet again. A few months later his computer completely failed. I offered to help him rebuild his computer. A new chassis (I hated his old computer case), a new motherboard, a new CPU, and new RAM and a new computer was constructed. He has been using the computer for 5 years now, and is now talking about building a new system. So ... all is well ... and such.
Friend-B
Recently, another friend discussed purchasing a new computer. Mostly for office work, basic gaming, music and video storage, and web browsing. I discussed helping him build a new computer, but he opted for a pre-built computer. He is currently shopping around for it as we speak.
So, Why did Friend-A opt to build, and Friend-B opt to buy?
To Build
In Friend-A's case he already owned new SSDs and large mechanical hard drives. His GPU was also in good shape. He had an actual store-purchased copy of Windows 7 with a non-OEM serial number. This means he could transfer the license and upgrade to Windows 10. Replacing the failed parts and re-building a computer was a much better idea than buying a new gaming PC.
To Buy
Friend-B is a novice and has few computer skills. So when I brought up the idea of building a computer he didn't seem too enthused.
Why many Computer Users Don't Build Their Own Computers
It all comes down to perception. Novice users think it is hard to assemble a PC. To a point it can be. All of the hardware specs, which brands to choose, anti-static precautions ... etc. The list goes on and on.
Novices like to cling to name brands like Hewlett Packard, Dell, and Acer. They also like the fact that there is a warranty. Plus having customer support (for what that's worth) is a comfort for novice users. It comes down to how acclimated you are to upgrading and fixing your own computer. If you don't know how to repair your own PC, or have never had a computer purchasing a pre-built seems like a good idea.
Conclusion
From a computer expert's point of view building a PC seems better than buying a pre-built. From an ex-mac users perspective I get both sides. I am in the To Build classification. I love assembling the parts that make up my computer. I also get the benefits of a longer warranty because each individual part has a warranty of 2-years or more. There is a lure to customer support, and a year of free repairs. If I was a novice, or lacking skills I would welcome a warranty. I guess that is all that needs said. It's the reason many computer users don't build their own computers.
