The Battle of Martinique between the English fleet commanded by Admiral Rodney and the French fleet commanded by the Comte de Guichen on April 17, 1780, by Pierre Julien Gilbert ( 1783-1860)
Guichen sailed from Martinique on 13 April 1780 with a fleet of 23 ships of the line and 3,000 soldiers. His aim was to lure Rodney with his 20 ships of line out, then retreat and attack either St. Lucia or the British base in Barbados. However, their encounter ended in a draw as both parties were too badly damaged. Guichen sailed back to France and Rodney set off for New York.
