Summary: The disgraced Black heir has always wanted one thing: freedom. Growing up, it was freedom from the expectations and ideals that were forced upon him by his family. Sirius was always too loud, too energetic, and too curious for the likes of Walburga and Orion Black. He was exceptionally bright, demonstrating his magical talents from a young age, even if he often put them to mischievous use. Life changed for the young heir as soon as he became a Gryffindor. It was then that Sirius tasted what real, true rebellion was– and he knew he was never turning back. Sirius soon became everything his parents opposed: a troublemaker, a sympathizer with anyone of muggle ancestry, and loyal to a group of boys of whom he had no blood connection. As the years passed and the first flames of war were ignited, Sirius wanted a whole new freedom altogether: the freedom to live, not just for himself, but for others as well. Sirius threw himself headfirst into the war, applying his outstanding magical abilities and often reckless bravery into every situation he ran into. In moments of joy, Sirius can be the life of a room, charming and funny and passionate. However, he can easily shift into someone else entirely, in times of trouble becoming withdrawn, short tempered, and impulsive to the point of causing damage to himself or others.
The Black family hasn’t been the same since the day Sirius was born. In the beginning, it was due to the fact that he was the first male heir in several years, placing his parents in a position of utmost power within the Black family and Sirius in a position that demanded nothing short of perfection. The expectations of an heir were drilled into Sirius’ mind from day one and he was raised to be obedient and loyal to the Blacks. However, named after the brightest star, Sirius was exactly that, igniting the dismal and dark halls of Grimmauld Place with an energy that far outshone those of his relatives and the portraits of his ancestors. It was hard to reign Sirius in, intelligent and energetic as he was, with a curiosity that was bursting to get outside of the walls of Number 12. In spite of the marked differences between him and the rest of his family, Sirius went into Hogwarts fully believing that he would be carrying on the duties his parents had placed on him. He was to go into Slytherin, he was to follow his father’s footsteps, and he was to carry on the Black family name as noble as all the generations before him had done. How very wrong he was.
Sirius can contribute to Hogwarts as the biggest turning point of his life. It did not happen overnight; he struggled initially with his Sorting, believing he had somehow betrayed his parents and brother by joining Gryffindor House. He had to unlearn the purist ideals he was raised with. But it was within those castle walls that Sirius met the people that would have the most profound effect on him: the Marauders. Through them, he found an understanding and love he had never experienced before, and knew he had found brothers to call his own. Sirius not only learned how to become an animagus or how to raise the most chaos– he learned what things in life actually mattered and what real loyalty was.
It didn’t take long for Sirius to become one of the most popular boys in school, with his charm, good looks, and rebellious reputation only aiding him further. Yet despite this front he put on for everyone, Sirius struggled greatly with his life at home. Tension with his parents grew worse with every passing year. Everything Sirius did was met with disapproval as he took his heir duties less seriously. What once was just disagreements with his close-minded parents soon escalated into explosive shouting matches, with Sirius often having to take refuge in the home of his best mate. His decision to run away was not an easy one, especially since he knew he would be leaving Regulus behind. It took years for Sirius to not feel guilt over it and to realize he made the right decision for himself.
As soon as Sirius heard the whispers of a resistance forming during the war, he knew he wanted to join. Sirius did not show any apprehension to how dangerous it could be or how he would be risking his life every single day. He believed that dying for such a cause was an honorable and heroic way to go, that fighting for his loved ones was the only way he wished to die. Despite pledging loyalty immediately upon his graduation, others within the Order, the elders especially, did not see Sirius as trustworthy. His Black surname followed him like a disease, with many within the ranks pointing out that half his relatives were Death Eaters. This only gave Sirius a deep thirst to prove himself as committed to the cause as possible. Sirius volunteered for the most dangerous tasks, the most risky missions, all with a reckless grin on his lips. He not only survived the war– he thrived during it.
It wasn’t until the war touched the people most dear to him did it all come crashing down for Sirius. Upon learning that James, Lily and his godson had a target on their backs, Sirius was willing to do anything to keep them safe. His terrible decision to make Peter the Secret Keeper could have resulted in consequences that Sirius would rather not think about. Though he is relieved beyond words that the Potters survived, Peter’s betrayal has cut Sirius deep. The former heir already had enough trust issues as it was and he did not leave the war unscathed.
No time like the present:
Sirius wants to live life to the fullest. After spending years not knowing if he’d live to see another day, or even see his friends again, Sirius plans on taking every opportunity he can get to move forward. He has worked over the years as a bartender and recently acquired a pub of his own to manage, The Lion’s Den, with the help of some wealth left to him by the late Fleamont and Euphemia Potter. Sirius enjoys being his own boss and having nobody else to answer to. He sees the pub as a meeting place for people like him, who’ve survived the war and need a place they can go and ask for a bottle of firewhisky without questions asked. However, The Lion’s Den’s doors are open to everyone, whether Sirius may personally like them or not. When he is not busy running his pub, Sirius is happily fulfilling his role as godfather or connecting with the friends that remained from the war.
However eager he is to see a brighter future, Sirius remains wary of wizarding society. Peter’s betrayal has demonstrated to him that nobody is who they may seem, and that even the most harmless of figures may have their ulterior motives. Dumbledore’s rise to power has certainly made Sirius question what the wizard’s motives were from the very beginning of the war. Sirius is no stranger to questioning authority and will not hesitate to voice his opinion on the matter. Though he has faith that Dumbledore was the only one who could have defeated Voldemort, he knows that the evil did not disappear overnight. His Death Eater relatives run free from the consequences of their crimes during the war, keeping Sirius looking over his shoulder despite the war being ‘over.’
James Potter, Remus Lupin - The best friends anyone could ask for. Sirius trusts the two with everything and is usually found pestering one or both of them.
Extended by player: Inseparable. If there was one word to describe James Potter and Sirius Black’s friendship, it would be that. At the center of Sirius’ chosen family is James, with Sirius considering James’ wife and son as much his family as anybody else. The two have matured over the years from their schoolboy antics, with the war forcing them into situations they never would have imagined. However at the heart of their relationship remains the same unconditional loyalty that Sirius cherishes more than anything else in the world. They hardly have any secrets that haven’t been shared, can read each other like a book, and can’t go longer than a few days without feeling like a part of them is missing. Sirius would have gladly died in the war to keep James and his family safe. Now that the impending threat of Voldemort no longer hangs over them, Sirius wants to enjoy the Potters as much as he can, being the godfather to James’ child and a brother to James.
Peter Pettigrew - Who? The once friend turned enemy has meant nothing to Sirius ever since the day Regulus let slip Peter had the mark and was working closely with the Lestranges. Threats were exchanged between the two but Sirius has yet to follow through on them.
Regulus Black - It took several years for Regulus and Sirius to get back on speaking terms. The two were inseparable siblings during their early years, with Regulus holding a grudge the moment Sirius ran away without taking him. Things are still awkward between the two but their relationship is in better shape than when they were decidedly not talking to each other.
Extended by player: As of now, the Black brothers’ relationship is complicated, to say the least. Prior to Hogwarts, the two were closely knit, with Sirius often dragging Regulus along into his adventurous games and tricks. Sirius felt responsible for his younger brother, often taking the blame when they got into trouble so as to spare his brother from their parents’ treatment. Despite the fierce protectiveness he felt, there was always a touch of envy to the fraternal love Sirius had. Orion and Walburga made it clear to Sirius as often as they could that he needed to be more like his obedient brother who acted like a proper Black should. That jealousy only grew over the years as Sirius became more and more rebellious and Regulus grew more like their parents. A rift went up between the brothers, one that became solid concrete as the war began and threw them on opposite sides of it. Despite it all, Sirius loved his brother in his own way, though he did not expect to speak to Regulus ever again. That was until Regulus single handedly saved Sirius’ best friends from a terrible fate. In light of Regulus’ actions, Sirius is trying to adjust to the new dynamic, because even if Sirius is eternally grateful for Regulus, he is still his annoying little brother.
