Summary: Elijah has always had an air of confidence about him, something that he gained from his brother but never learnt to perfect in quite the same way, in secret the cracks begin to show and reveal a lonely young man, who has spent almost his whole life faking it. He never likes to do anything by halves and once he commits to something puts his whole heart into it. He is fiercely protective of those he cares about, something that has caused him no end of problems in his life. He is fairly defensive and struggles to back down from a fight even if he ends up saying something he doesn’t mean and has to apologise later. One of his most dominating traits is how impressionable he is- taking his brother’s word as gospel for so many years and following his lead almost like a soldier following their general. He is prone to making decisions without really thinking them through, emotions often overwhelming him and influencing these moments. Elijah is also as stubborn as it gets, something he knows he will need to work on, now he was about to go into a totally different environment. Elijah knows that he is far from perfect and has many things still to improve on, but overall his heart is usually in the right place, even if at times he can be totally misguided.
childhood (trigger warning: abortion mention)
Growing up the younger of the two Nott siblings, Elijah always felt like he was second in everything. It couldn’t be more clear that he was the least favourite child. Overhearing one night when he was home from Hogwarts that his parents hadn’t planned to have him, that he’d been an accident. Hearing that conversation, it had been clear that the only reason he even existed was that his parents didn’t want to ruin the family reputation by having an abortion. It didn’t come as a total shock to Elijah, he had never once been able to capture their attention in the way that his brother had. Nothing he did was ever good enough, but that didn’t stop him trying. The more uninterested they seemed, the more Elijah tried to buy their love. His relationship with his brother was different; his brother always had his back and quickly became Elijah’s role model. When he was young Elijah was often seen following his brother around, trying to copy everything he did and be just like him. It changed a little bit once Elijah was left alone as his older brother started attending Hogwarts.
Elijah began to try and expand his friends circle outside of just his brother’s friends, who whilst still friendly to him, were not as interested now that it was just him. Marlene Mckinnon quickly became one of his closest friends. They had been friends already for a while, but grew closer. She was completely different to most of the other people he knew, and managed to bring out a side to him he didn’t know existed. A more relaxed version of himself that truly had fun. With little parental guidance, Elijah and Marlene got up to all sorts of mischief under his family’s nose. His brother’s friends weren’t fond of the friendship which made Elijah hide how close they had gotten from his brother. Not wanting to disappoint him as well. When Elijah started Hogwarts it became harder to maintain the friendship, Elijah wanted to impress his Slytherin housemates and was now back in his brother’s close circle and with all the talk about blood purity, his friendship with Marlene didn’t last more than a couple of years after that.
In his second year, Elijah tried out to join the Quidditch team and it quickly became something that he both adored and was extremely talented at. He got good grades in most of his subjects but he didn’t care about them as much as he cared about the game. Spending most of his free time practicing and perfecting his skills. By his fifth year, Elijah was the Slytherin quidditch captain as well as the keeper. There was no doubt in Elijah’s mind that this is what he was going to do for the rest of his life. It was something he was better at than his brother and he knew that he was damn good at it. His teachers were already talking about how he needed to try out for the professional teams after Hogwarts. Whilst his parents didn’t seem to care that much about his success, his housemates did and for the first time in a long time Elijah felt that they wanted to be friends with him because of who he was- rather than because of who his brother was.
Following Hogwarts, Elijah did try out for several teams. Overjoyed when he was accepted by the Montrose Magpies- arguably the most successful team in the whole league. Elijah felt good. He’d always had confidence about him, but until now it had only been skin deep. Not something he really believed. Now he felt like he had found who he was supposed to be. Unfortunately for Elijah the joy didn’t last for long- taking an especially nasty tumble during a semi finale. Leaving him with a career ending injury. Elijah reluctantly moved back into his parents house- no longer able to fund his own flat without his Quidditch salary. From there Elijah sunk back into the quieter version of himself - that one that still needed his family’s approval to feel good about himself.
After losing the only thing he’d ever loved, Elijah was completely lost. He had heard rumours of an uprising against the muggleborns but at first just wrote them off as chatter. Until one day his brother approached him. He had just joined a group called the Death Eaters. It was in it’s very early stages and of course his brother had been one of the first to be invited to join and he was asking Elijah to join too. Elijah’s views on blood purity had always been complicated. His family and everyone around him growing up had insisted on the importance of pure blood and how it was the only way to keep the wizarding world in existence, but at Hogwarts Elijah had met half-borns and muggleborns who were talented too. Elijah had requested to think about it for a while- trying to buy himself time more than anything else. It all changed when for the first time ever, his father asked to speak to him one on one in his office. Cantankerus had all but insisted that Elijah joined, telling him that as a member of the Nott family it was expected of him to stand up for their rights in society. Feeling like he could finally gain his father’s approval Elijah joined the Death Eaters.
For a long time, Elijah was numb to the violence and hatred in the group- it was easier that way. Reminding himself that pure blood had to be preserved for the greater good of the wizarding community. He didn’t dare not follow orders, knowing he would probably be killed if he ever showed a moment’s hesitation. As always his brother was excelling- and was at the very top of the ranks. That didn’t help Elijah’s position- he knew that whatever he did affected his brother and no matter what Elijah would never put him at risk. His parents were now regularly asking him about details of missions and what he’d achieved. Elijah had always wanted their attention, but now that he had it- it just didn’t feel right. It felt like he was watching his own life from above- as if someone else was in control of his body. Elijah was not generally a violent person- but being in the Death Eaters had forced him to use both the imperious and cruciatus curse on multiple occasions.
Elijah had resigned himself to the fact that this was his life now, trying to make the most of it that he could and silently wishing for the war to be over soon. It was one particular mission that made Elijah realise that he could no longer continue on like this. He was a second in command on a very important mission, one of the highest honors he’d had so far in the group- but the mission got complicated and suddenly he was face to face with Marlene and her brother. The moment he saw the green light headed for Nicholas, Elijah felt the reality of what he’d become involved in. Whilst he still believed that keeping the bloodlines pure was the best way forward; it wasn’t worth killing for. Though he was just a bystander to the killing, Elijah felt responsible for it and could barely contain himself as he watched Marlene sob over her brother’s body- glad for the fact that he never went on a mission without wearing his mask.
Elijah didn’t know what to do after- he knew he needed a way out without physically getting out. But who could he turn to. His friends were all Death Eaters, his parents admired him for joining the ranks and for once this was not something that he could speak to his brother about. A few nights of little to no sleep and Elijah found himself writing a letter to Albus Dumbledore. He hadn’t expected a reply- either supposing Dumbledore would be too busy to read it or would just think it was a trap. But Dumbledore did reply- and then there were more letters back and forth. Dumbeldore offering advice and then eventually asking Elijah to send him information about the Death Eaters' plans. Something that Elijah was easily able to get his hands on through his brother. Elijah didn’t like betraying his brother’s trust- but the way Elijah saw it, Dumbledore was his only way out. Especially when the war started to come to an end and it was becoming clear that the Death Eaters were going to be the losing side. That wasn’t Elijah’s reason for agreeing to become a spy though- his guilt over the situation with Marlene and everything else that he had done, that was the reason. He wasn’t sure his actions could ever be redeemed but he could at least try and fix some of them.
Once the war finished, things at home became even worse than before. There was a constant tension and his brother had almost become a recluse. Elijah had managed to come out of the war without getting caught- he wondered if it was out of pure luck or if Dumbledore had taken care of it for him. His brother on the other hand had initially been arrested but had managed to get the conviction overturned using the imperius curse excuse. Without his brother’s friendship now, Elijah felt completely alone. He wanted out of the house but had no idea where to start in terms of a new career- turning once again to Dumbledore for advice, having now become Elijah’s number one confidant.
Dumbledore had suggested that with Elijah’s good grades he tried out for the auror programme. He was hesitant at first, it would be like walking into the lion’s den. Elijah knew that even though he was never caught it was common knowledge that he had been part of the Death Eater’s ranks. After ultimately deciding that he was used to people not wanting to be around him and could handle it at work too he applied to become a trainee auror. Frank Longbottom had initially asked for a further interview with him, not something that shocked Elijah, but he definitely knew it wasn’t a good sign. It was a surprise then, when not twenty four hours later, he received a letter of acceptance into the programme, signed by none other than Frank himself. It was not hard to work out that Dumbledore had been behind this as well.
Dumbledore having his back over and over, made Elijah feel indebted to him. He felt like he needed to pay back Dumbledore’s kindness with his loyalty. Though he knew he still had to be careful about it. He was not ready yet to publicly announce his loyalty to Dumbledore amongst his friends and family. There had been enough upset in his household, without his family finding out that he was now friendly with the man who had killed their idol. Elijah was concerned about working at the Ministry- as much as he had convinced himself he would be okay if nobody wanted to speak to him- he was still the same young boy desperate for love and approval. Finding out that Marlene still worked for the Ministry had not been easy either- almost having a panic attack the first time he had seen her from across the foyer.
Elijah is now just trying to find a new path for himself. Still lost and unsure what to do about his friends and family and his heart telling him that their actions were unforgivable. To say he was conflicted would be an understatement. For now, he is just trying to do better, be a better version of himself and trying to make up for some of the pain he caused.
Lucius Malfoy: Since joining the Death Eaters, Elijah has always been wary of Lucius. He was calculating and smart and Elijah hated that Lucius committed some of the worse acts out of the group and still managed to keep his status in society like he had. Elijah is also concerned that Lucius might suspect that his loyalty to Voldemort didn’t last through to the end of the war. If Lucius was to find out Elijah had been writing to Dumbledore, he didn’t know what might happen to him.
Marlene Mckinnon: Elijah and Marlene were close childhood friends up until the early years of Hogwarts were their views of blood purity began to separate them. It had been simple when they were younger. The fact that his parents cared little for him gave him more freedom in some ways. Looking back he doubted his brother would’ve been allowed to hang out with a family like the McKinnons. Elijah was also there when Marlene’s brother was killed (though he was behind a mask and Marlene didn’t know)- a moment that changed things for him during the war.
