One last post on this one. I enjoyed doing this last time with the Yongary vs Pulgasari piece so here's one with comparisons between the Showa era movie of Gamera vs Guiron from 1969. I saw this movie for the first time recently in trying to do a painting from the movie. The only reference I have for Guiron was a tiny rubber toy the size of a dime I acquired many years ago. In looking it up images for research I found the full movie uploaded on YouTube dubbed in what I assumed to be an Indian dialect. I sorta skimmed through the movie, but man was it rough. Clearly Daei didn't have the same budget as Toho who produced the Godzilla movies. The suits looked like paper mache concoctions from a high school play. But in doing the research for the environments and intricacies of Guiron and Space Gyaos I ended up falling in love with these goofy character designs. Here are some close up details of the creatures. I couldn't recall it but guiron was redesigned to have a more organic look with the blade coming out of the head. But I didn't want it looking too close to a pacific rim kaiju so I only reduced the eyes by a little to not deviate too far from the original design. I gave him a neck, which I realize now sorta detracts from his iconic crescent moon silhouette. I think it looks better in profile view which I extrapolated from an earlier pen ink sketch. The hole in the middle of the knife came from the fact that I didn't want a shuriken to simply be plopped on like a wheel rim, so I tried to make it more organic looking and a guide for the stars to come out of the front forehead.
