Studio III- Conceptual Statement
The reason why we choose to base our project on young children with learning disabilities is because the schooling system does not offer assistance to these young children. Although, they have recognised these young children and their limitations, the way they teach still has not been improved to accommodate all learning styles. These young children are also labelled as slow or dumb, which brings down their self-esteem.
Through research and personal experience, we discovered people diagnosed with Dyslexia find reading and writing difficult although, they find creativity, problem solving, original insights and high level conceptualisation their strengths. We have used this research to inform our design process. Through extensive research we initially decided to create a product which will help young children with Dyslexia spell and enunciate words properly, in a fun way. Furthermore, these children have short attention span. Children aged between 5-7 years olds tend to spend around 10-15 minutes on an activity, only if it is interesting to them. (Day 2 Day Parenting, 2015). So, now, our project has to be fun and interactive to keep young children's attention, but also ensure they learn in the process.
At the initial stage of the Project, we explored the theme of Dyslexia in order to develop ideas that can possibly help the Dyslexic community in New Zealand to improve the learning process and feel more confident in a classroom environment. We chose to limit our project to primary school children, as the first signs of Dyslexia are identified when core reading and writing skills are being taught.
Before mid-semester break we realised our project was lacking and needed something more. Initially, we wanted to create a, theoretical, workshop. Which would teach the community about learning disabilities - what they are, what happens, what it is like and how to support them. Through this, the stigma around learning disabilities would lessen and support for those with learning disabilities would rise. As we continued researching and interviewing people, it became apparent there was a need for a safe space for these young children to express themselves, instead of a workshop.
This gave way to Te Aroha, a space that allows them to express what they are going through, share their accomplishments and to gain perspective as to what they are going through, through others’ stories. Furthermore, we choose to include an experience section. This section allows users to experience what it is like to have a learning disability. Through this, users will gain insight into what it is like to have a learning disability and will empathise towards those who do have a learning disability. Parents and caregivers of these young children find it difficult to communicate with their children because their children are closed off and are unwilling to open up to their parents.
Compared to the original goal of our project, the final outcome of our project has achieved everything we set out to accomplish and more. The cube is engaging, while it also teaches young children to spell and enunciate words properly, through the use of augmented reality.
Te Aroha can become a safe haven for these young children, allowing them to express themselves in a safe way, therefore improving their self-esteem, and overall encapsulating the original goal of project and the added benefit of a communication tool.

Conceptual Statement
In my performance piece ipseity, I use the concept of time as a focus to extend the position I find myself in life. I am learning how to live life and develop a narrative of who I am through self-expression during this semester. “Art is the only way to run away without leaving home.” ― Twyla Tharp. The essence of my video piece is to convey the real me and to capture who I am in a specific moment of time. After moving away from Gisborne I have felt lost with no sense of direction. I felt like I was disintegrating into a ‘nobody’ and all of my passions were no longer existent. My ideas came from a range of conceptual situations from day to do day life.
An exploration of ‘Identity’ in relation to myself as a person are discussed through creative practices to identify who I am. In the beginning I did not have a clear sense of direction and wanted to understand myself first, before executing my core concept. Allowing myself to act in a free spirit I began to understand who I am as a creative practitioner and how time is relevant to each individual. I wanted to challenge myself and show case Me; as narcissistic this may seem it has helped me to reflect on: who I am, what I want to achieve and who I want to be in the future. Having access to places like the textile lab gave me the opportunity to explore concepts and design digital prints that illustrate me. The intention of my work developed mainly in the second half of the semester, after exploring my hobbies and creative arts that I am interested in. Self-doubt has always held me back from day one in BCT, this year I wanted to challenge myself and find my passions once more.
During the development stage of my project I gathered questions from a diverse range of people and had my friend filter questions that were appropriate. I chose this process to give guidance to the context of my video. Although my answers are unscripted I am still capturing who I am. The purpose of my video is to convey my vulnerability and for all of my answers to be: honest, sincere and real. I go beyond what others have done in creative technologies, because I am exploring this idea of ‘identity’ and who I am as a creative being. “It's like everyone tells a story about themselves inside their own head. Always. All the time. That story makes you what you are. We build ourselves out of that story.” - Patrick Rothfuss. My work is located as being self-exploratory and gives the audience the opportunity to understand who I am as an individual, at this point in time. The digital tapestry is a metaphor of me, especially because when I was designing the image being illustrated displayed how I was feeling at that particular point in time.
My ideas are located in the world of art. I want to express who I am with pure emotion and feelings. Intentions of work was to be produced in a genuine manner. As my project developed I became more aware of who I am, and how I can better myself by exploring a variety of ideas. This process developed from me allocating time to do hobbies and do whatever I felt like doing, whether it be singing or painting. From this self-recognition I then understood what I wanted to pursue. At the beginning of the semester I was unsure of what studio stream to be in, digital skins was appealing but I did not like the idea of having restrictions and meeting a specific criteria. The ‘Real World’ stream allowed me to explore fashion and textiles in my own brief. Personally I think it is important to do work that means something to you, or what you are passionate about; to better yourself. Instead of meeting others expectations I gave myself guidelines to find out who I am and what this course means to me. Technology will forever be changing, there will always be the latest app and new software. I have grown up in a generation where technology has always been around and there are upgrades each year. I want my project to convey my interests rather than create something that fits the world of technology. The textile lab allowed me to understand how their printers and machines work, I became more confident with different video cameras. I have never been heavily involved with camera work or editing short films, this project allowed me to challenge this and learn basic skills to edit a short performance of myself. The core foundation behind my performance piece is exploring creativity to find myself.
Conceptual Statement
My finished work embodies the core concept of time being conveyed through: sound, image and space. I allowed myself to explore a range of ideas until with the last few weeks when I narrowed down what I wanted to achieve and what message I wanted to create for the audience. Looking back on what I have done over the semester I understand that my overall project had been developed from one idea that was broad and could have been completed in a variety of ways. Rather than having a physical interactive feature for my final project to have I have made the interactivity through the person looking and listening to my idea. Video and photography allows visual communication to the audience and wearing the headphones emphasises the message I am trying to portray through imagery. Sound allows the individual watching the video to change their mood and be more calm and relaxed. My work embodies the idea that using your two senses of being able to see and hear can have an influence on your mood and how you interpret the world.
Conceptual Statement
Concept
The concept for my Integrative Practice assignment was to explore with long exposures while following a theme of the Elements and Godly Powers. I have always been in love with the subject of Elemental and Supernatural powers.
Inspiration
I was inspired by the photographer Ben Von Wong. Fire photography video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_Ei1J35ZsQ
Andy introduced the class to this video in one of the early lectures and from then I wanted to explore the techniques necessary in producing-like images. It turned out that others in the class were also captured by this and wanted to pursue long-exposure fire photography as well. This is when the first crude sketches were made of what ideas could be presented through the techniques.
Fly High - Conceptual Statement - 22 05 2014
Conceptual Statement
The Design of my craft in which I named "VENTURE" was sorted from our groups morphological chart. I needed a Power Source, form of Steering, Lift, Acceleration, Landing Gear, Housing(material), Navigation and Sustainability.
The Power Source I used was a combination of Solar Energy, Batteries and a small scale Combustion engine. Because Solar panels run at only 12-14% efficiency with 1/8 of the suns energy converting to electricity and the rest heating the panel, this excessive heat can be used and taken advantage of. I would made is so the water that needs to be hot (for the shower, washing etc.) would be stored in the roof just under the solar panels. This would mean that we would not need to waste power on heating the water but instead use the excess heat from the solar panels to heat the water.
Another Power Source is the balloon itself. Due to current research found in my References bellow "...works by first trapping solar energy in a greenhouse, and then using this heated air to inflate a giant balloon. As the ballon rises it pulls on an earthbound tether, spinning a generator to produce electricity." This invention can produce up to 50 kw, plenty for the appliances and general use of the housing electronics (TV, computers, lights etc.)
Steering used is a standard blimp Rudder for changing direction. The thought behind this is relatively simple as It was the only logical means of steering when I changed my concept to a singular balloon idea that made use of the wind and the shape of my craft. I used a Balloon above the craft and Propellers underneath to assist in Lift. I went with a singular balloon design after playing around the two balloon concepts and finding them prone to movement and separation unless connected or unified. This is of course based on what I wanted the craft to look like and function so a multiple balloon concept is still very feasible. I chose one balloon because I would not need to turn with my craft and it allowed more weight to be carried.
Acceleration is caused by Ionic Thrusters and Propellers. The reasoning behind the Ionic Thrusters is that they are very light but also expensive and that is why I chose a small scale form of this for emergencies. They are also are low risk and produce very little heat with medium grade thrust which is great for this light craft. For the Propellers I chose to go with 3 blades and small form factor, these are located to the back and bottom of the craft, and are angled for acceleration but also used for lift and stabilization.
For Lading I chose landing feet because they are easily tucked away and great for large craft of this size. Because it will not be moving or have any acceleration upon decent and landing, mechanical feet are the best approach.
For the main structure of the accommodation I chose Carbon fibre because it is very light but very strong and can be formed into any shape and lastly, does not corrode which is required because of the weather conditions this form of Housing will be exposed to. I also have gone with triple layered plexiglas for the widows, pool glass and glass railing. This is the glass needs to withstand pressure of flight at 10,000 ft - 15, 0000 ft.
For Navigation I chose Internet. Because all our routes are predetermined, the craft would always be connected to radio, GPS and the internet so that customers can keep track of their location and time left on journey as well as weather reports and assistance from a personal service provider linked and always in contact with each craft. For Sustainability I chose the Hot Air Balloon and Propellers to keep the craft moving with little technical problems and be a long running form of flight.

Aesthetic Prosthetics Conceptual Statement
The story we wanted to tell was one of consumerism. Like the protagonist, we place different objects or things on to ourselves simply because they are new and exciting and also to differentiate ourselves from our surroundings and other people. In our video, the protagonist places so many foreign black blobs on to itself and in doing so transitions into a completely different character visually and mentally (shown by the chaos of the environment which represents state of mind). The purpose of our video was to make the viewer question themself, and whether they really need all of the materialistic things in life to be happy with who they are. I feel that our video illustrates what I envisioned in my statement of intent. We did create a universe in which our story was told - an unstable world, a whispering desert of dissent. Each viewer gains a unique experience because each person interprets our video differently, a couple of other interpretations have been of Yin and Yang and the danger of addiction.
Editing and Transmedia
On Friday we finally finished filming our raw footage, and today we started editing. We have a mammoth task ahead of us. We need to do audio, editing out all of the unwanted white blobs which enabled our character's movement, and to finish our transmedia streams. We are really struggling with the transmedia component of this brief. We used Facebook trying to get initial ideas but we didn't implement any of the suggestions we got into our final story. I think that this was because the suggested ideas were too superficial and unhelpful because we couldn't make them fit the short stop motion animation. We have made some GIFs and a couple of posters but are unsure of where to put them or how they make sense with our video. G gave us a brilliant idea to remix our sounds into a 1 minute track which can be part of the after life of our video. However, we can only do that once we have all of the audio we need. Completing all of these things before the due date, along with a reflective statement and the other two projects for other papers is going to be a struggle. I'm actually pretty scared that I don't have time to finish everything. We need to film some more raw footage tomorrow as well because our story doesn't make sense to anyone else except us. Karin helped us today by giving some advice as to what kind of shots we need to do to make the story more coherent. Ash was sick today as well, I hope he comes in tomorrow so that we have more man power to complete everything. I don't want to panic, but there's is so much to do and so little time. I have another Rookie meeting tomorrow morning as well which cuts down even more Studio time. I may need to pull some all nighters.
