Are you disappointed that a visit to a Smithsonian museum or a National Park Service memorial is not possible this week? Fear not because not everything in Washington is closed due to the government shutdown. Here are some highlights from our Concierge of attractions that are staying open and may provide an even richer DC experience that imagined:
1 - Hillwood Museum and Garden: Explore philanthropist and collector Marjorie Merriweather Post's Hillwood, an urban oasis blending lush botanicals with outstanding examples of 18th-century French decorative art, including Marjorie Post's French collection (pictured) that ranks among the best in America.
2- The Phillips Collection: One of our favorite places in DC, and America's first museum of modern art. Magnifique and not to be missed!
3 - The Corcoran Gallery of Art: Probably Washington D.C.'s most significant non-government art museum, the Corcoran is recognized internationally for a distinguished collection of historic and modern American art as well as contemporary art, photography, European painting, sculpture, and decorative arts.
4- Bureau of Engraving and Printing: See millions of dollars being printed during a tour of the BEP. The tour features the various steps of currency production, beginning with large, blank sheets of paper, and ending with wallet-ready bills.
5 - Newseum: Often cited as a guest favorite, this is a museum that blends five centuries of news history with up-to-the-second technology and hands-on exhibits.
6 - Ford's Theatre: One of the most historical places in DC, visit this active theater for great drama and loads of history, most notably the location of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Currently you can see the production of 'The Laramie Project', as well as walking tours every Saturday.
6- The Crime Museum: The Crime Museum is an interactive museum exploring the history of crime, law enforcement, forensic science, crime scene investigation and more.
7 - The International Spy Museum is not to be missed when visiting DC. We particularly like their newest exhibit 'Exquisitely Evil: 50 Years of James Bond Villains.'
8 - Mount Vernon Estate & Gardens: Visit the plantation home of the first President of the United States, George Washington, plus a host of other historical attractions on site.
9 - Madame Tussaud’s: Get up close and personal with your favorite celebrity wax figures at the world famous tourist attraction.
10 - National Museum of Women in the Arts: America's only museum solely dedicated to celebrating women’s achievements in the visual, performing, and literary arts.
