The unpopular hs trope and the lack of apology

Something that always bothers me in the movies where the main character is a super unpopular hs student and they have a bully

There is always some justifiable reason for their bully being a mean, a sob story or something that makes you feel bad for them. Which is fine, it makes the characters more interesting and complex.

However, they always make the main character bend first.

The main character offers to help tutor or sees that the bully is being abused or has a past hurt that breaks them down. So the main character gives the bully a pass, they move on and become semi-friends.

I have never seen the bully apologize or the nice main character tell them what a bitch they are. I have never seen the hurt caused to the main character recognized in a way that says, “ I understand that you are hurting but you have made my life hell and you need to know that your hurt doesn’t excuse it”. And I really wish that happened more because yeah, the nice person is more likely to bend but they shouldn’t have to. A person should be allowed to point out consequences and demand responsibilty for their pain without losing their niceness.
