This is a response to 294 kind of, but also the response about how T'Lyn as a science officer is unoriginal.
I can understand how it's not entirely original, but Vulcan has one of the most prestigious science academies, so it makes sense that the vulcan characters would skew that way. And full disclosure, I'm biased, the vulcan characters are some of my favorites.
The relationship each one has with their culture is very interesting, especially with starfleet being a semi paramilitary organization. I especially like T'Lyn because she is kind of a disaster in terms of vulcan principals. I mean she was sent to starfleet as a punishment (which shows how most vulcans think of sf). She's a complex character that happens to be a vulcan science officer. I think most vulcans come off as samey because of their strict morals amd traditions, but it's not fair to say this makes all of them boring. Every vulcan in starfleet is shown to go against these traditions in their own unique ways.
Vulcans are also the only ones who can consistently pull off a bowl cut. And I respect that
