“I know Winx club holds a lot of nostalgia for people but my rewatch of the early seasons recently just made me disappointed. Like you have 5-6 girls and only 3 villains that aren’t even that strong? And then you don’t even flesh out your world and backstories? But keep adding locations you have to animate without them adding anything to the plot?
Why have a school setting if you never see anything school related going on? A hair color spell that never gets brought up again is really the extent of it. It felt like there weren’t any stakes because there wasn’t enough limits or explanations added to the magic system. Just… they had so much stuff that was in there but not much going on. It’s ok to cut down on the amount of stuff in your show, or even characters, if it gives you the chance to tell a more coherent storyline.
Like MLP has a large cast but you get invested because they don’t have to be in every frame of every episode and it’s ok to change the focus from one set to another for new dynamics. It’s a show that’s more episodic in plot. Winx Club didn’t set itself up like that. It set itself up with big cast and what was trying to be a linear storyline but kept tripping over itself.
Like with Lolirock you have a balance. The episodic nature is ok because you have 3 solid mains who practice with their skills and an understanding that more is coming plot wise but that it won’t really affect much until the finale. Star vs the forces of Evil is all plot at this point but they started by fleshing their characters out first using different scenarios and once implementing rules stick to them.
Like, there’s so many ways that the show could have been improved from the get go by just narrowing down what they wanted out of it. A high school/career/royalty/space/fairy/drama/environmental show? Pick two or three and stick to it and your show will be remembered just fine. So a high school/fairy with an emphasis on royalty, drama or the environment gives you plenty of room to work with as a magical girl show. They just had too much going on to give themselves a chance to shine. You can do so much, but you can’t do it all without serious discussion.
Like Layla/Aisha, Musa, and Flora are great characters cuz they can work off each other and other people, but it’s rare that we get to see any of the dynamics. Techa… I’m sorry but 3 seasons in and not even a word of her homeworld? How can I connect to someone who never gets this kind of basic thing? Layla was introduced in the second season and has her home shown but not someone who’s been there since the first season?
That and any growth seems to do a 180 at each season’s start. There’s never any feeling of progress in the girls or their love interests which the show tries way to hard to insert since they don’t have any organic way of doing it because the schools aren’t co-ed. Also why have non-magic love interests if they’re all from explicitly magic places? Just discuss this already show. Every other magical girl show can have a conversation, but yours can’t? Come on! You were my childhood! I expected better from you!”

Person who wrote the "Dear Doctor" confession here. The only things I regret about my confession is not capitalizing r/ShittyDaystrom and forgetting to find the person who came up with the theory in the first place so I can credit them🤦♂️
Posting this as a response to a previous confession.
The idea of Grey and Jevin being complete 180 to each other always fogs my mind. Grey being this nihilistic and hopeless "doomer" bureaucrat (or to say, your generic office guy), 11/12 imitation of Rodya Raskolnikov in terms of personality and is asocial by choice, still had a fairly decent life, especially his childhood. It's just the fact that his interest and enviroment he lives in differs from each other, creating a "personal damnation" for himself.
As for Jevin, he pretty much endured a war equivalent to the eastern front during ww2, witnessed the death of his family from said war entirely and experienced a betrayal that led to the death of his mentor, he remained pretty stoic and rely himself very solely on beliefs. Though, he is still rather asocial, but not by choice, rather more of nature. He pretty much still enjoys his current life (despite being harassed by Black each and every night) and to contrast with Grey (who beieves in logic and the sprunki liability on existing matter) is reliant on his religion and most probable superstition as it was the sole thing that saved him from those traumas.
Then it all eventually waters down to horror mode, where they'll have to put aside these differences and work together, sharing perspectives and view on how they see each others life, as they have become one of the few survivors in the town that are still reliable to fight against the corruption that has infests itself upon the world.
