I hate people who get all pretentious about movies, shows, etc, and say you can’t have a story without conflict, or misfortunes, or death
like first of all, yes you can. the hallmark channel makes like 370 million a year selling you stories with literally no substance for 3 months out of the year
second of all, no one is asking for every story to be hallmark story. i see this shit a lot in the marvel fandom, aimed at people who are still upset that Tony Stark died. I see it other fandoms too, especially when it comes to conflict. people love to climb up on their high horses and lecture others on how a story has to have conflict because conflict is an integral part of human experience.
the first avengers movie is still the third highest-grossing superhero movie, after the endgame and civil war. It brought in $1,518,812,988 while the winter soldier didn’t make half that amount. (and I would argue, in length, that the civil war and endgame were both worse movies overall, except that the hype built by the iron man franchise and the first avengers movie built up expectations, which were then not met. but you can’t un-buy a movie ticket, or un-watch a movie, as much as I wished to do exactly that after endgame)
the first avengers movie had conflict, misfortune, death. it dealt with some heavy subjects, and it had its share of tense and uncomfortable moments. it had an actual fucking war with alien creatures.
but no one left the theater feeling shitty about themselves, the fictional world they were just a part of, or the characters they met
in short, no one is asking for perfectly sanitized, happy-go-lucky movies. we’re just asking not to feel like shit after we finished watching one. and since the first avengers movie accomplished just that, no one can say it’s impossible or unprofitable
trust me, we’re all very well aware that “conflict is an integral part of human experience.” we know it because we live the human experience every day. i don’t think it’s too much to ask that the things we watch to get away from that everyday human experience (like fucking superhero movies, hello?) cut us a little fucking slack
