A little guy of indeterminate gender and gender identity entered the pub.

Thanks Bree! My question should be pretty simple. I have two cats and (probably bc of autism reasons) I started collecting some of the pieces of claw they shed (it kinda flakes off, idk if you have cats lol) and their claw trimmings. I feel like that could have some magical use? But I couldn't find much from a brief Internet search and I was wondering what you thought!

You've come to the right place! This is something I do as well, whenever one of my kitties leaves a big claw shard somewhere.

I put a whole bunch of them into a little glass bottle and made it a part of my household protection network. A bit of claw and bite for the magical defenses, if you will.

You could use them as a material focus for any spell that involves your pets for protective or healing purposes as well. Whiskers or shed fur floofs could be used for this purpose too.

I also wrote a spell that uses a shed claw or bit of fur to help create a little spirit guardian for the home. (You have to give it proper instructions and feed it periodically, but it works well!)

I might be getting a new dog soon and i need a name for him. He's a sweet good boy and he's handsome all over but his best feature is his eyes, which are shockingly blue for an organic creature. Any ideas?

ohh thank you!!! 🥺🥺🥺 a lot of the reason why i write fic is to explore emotions or consequences that didn't come up in canon (esp. things like jon's post-traumatic event emotions and conversations i wish had happened between characters) so i'm really glad that my fics serve that same purpose for you (and other readers) as well!! 💕💕

I have quastion: do you just know .......things........or do you do copious amounts of research for every single thing you post because I feel like I'm getting a history degree by reading all your essays

All those books over all those years means that even when I only know a little bit about a thing, it’s usually enough to let me go looking for more details. I’m good at research, and I enjoy it.

That’s why I’m so keen (punctilious? pedantic? nitpicky?) about getting proper names and proper spellings right. Without that, finding out more can be iffy. It’s also the reason why I try to illustrate arms and armour posts with original historical objects whenever possible, because modern non-expert terminology can sometimes be... Let’s just say “a little slapdash” and leave it there. 

Here’s an example of The Importance Of Names When Looking For Pictures, from just two hours ago:

@dduane is doing a DAZ illustration, and wanted to know what “the board outside a newsagent with a headline in big letters” is called, so she could look for some DAZ examples. My immediate thought was “a hoarding” - but that's what the US, and thus DAZ, calls “a billboard”, and is far too big.

Looking for Google images of “news hoarding” showed images of panic-bought loo roll, while “newspaper hoarding” showed homes and apartments crammed with decades-old magazines. Long story short, playing the thesaurus game with various combinations of words took a while, but it turns out that what she’s looking for is a “newsagent headline placard”.

Of course whether DAZ has any is another question...

I’m a novelist and screenwriter who reads about all that stuff because it’s entertaining, interesting, potential research for a story or all of the above, but I’m not a professional historian, so any history degree you might be getting is several degrees off true.

I’ll happily digress from medieval weapons to medieval bathing habits to medieval table manners, food and cutlery, before by yet more degrees gradually working my way back to weapons again. If there’s some way to add cats or travel or writing or cooking or music or any number of other things, that can also happen.

It doesn’t usually happen in the same post, though. Usually...

Hey I read your post about Bible verses and socialism, and as a Christian I just wanted to thank you for how respectful you were towards the Bible. It's rare to find someone who isn't religious and yet goes so far as to capitalise God, etc. You seem like a pretty great person ☺️
