This ritual calls upon Bastet, the Egyptian goddess of protection and cats, and Freya, the Norse goddess associated with felines, magic, and guardianship. Together, their energies create a powerful shield around your beloved cats, ensuring their safety and well-being.
• A small piece of raw meat or fish
• Incense (Frankincense, Myrrh, or Sandalwood for Bastet / Lavender or Rose for Freya)
• Your cat(s) present (or a picture if they cannot be near)
Preparation - Perform on a Friday (Freya’s sacred day) or during a full moon for heightened protection. Ideally, perform at dusk or dawn, times of liminality when divine energies are strongest. Find a quiet place where your cats feel comfortable. Light the incense and place the candles in front of you. Set the bowl of water at the center of your space.
Call Upon Bastet - Light the gold candle and hold your cat (or place a hand on them). Say,
“Bastet, great guardian of sacred felines,
Lion-hearted goddess of home and hearth,
Wrap your golden shield around [cat’s name(s)] today,
Let no harm, no sickness, no ill will pass their way.”
Offer the piece of meat or fish as an offering, setting it aside outside later for wildlife.
Call Upon Freya - Light the white candle and gently stroke your cat (or focus on their image). Say,
“Freya, Lady of Love, Seer of the Unseen,
Mistress of the Chariot led by sacred cats,
Surround [cat’s name(s)] in your silken cloak,
A shield of light, of magick, of safety invoked.”
Hold up the silver or gold charm and place it near the bowl of water.
Bless the Water for Protection - Dip your fingers in the bowl of water and gently sprinkle a few drops on your cat’s forehead or back, saying,
“By the grace of Bastet, by the power of Freya,
This water is a shield, this water is a light.
No harm shall cross it, no darkness take flight.”
If your cat dislikes water, simply hold your hand over them as you say the words. Visualize a golden and silver aura wrapping around your cat(s), forming a protective sphere. Say,
“Goddesses of cats, hear my plea,
As I will it, so shall it be.”
Blow out the candles, releasing the energy into the universe.
• Leave the offering outdoors for Bastet.
• Carry the charm or place it near your cat’s favorite resting spot for continued protection.
• Repeat this ritual once a year or whenever you feel your cat needs extra protection.
