Her smile faltered again, her shoulders slumped- but she remembered, in a flash, Connor Murphy throwing a heavy textbook at Brian Harris for loudly taunting Alana last year. He’d hit Brian dead in the face, and Alana should have reported it, she should have scolded Connor, but…But it was Connor.

It was Connor. It was senior year.

This year, Alana was going to talk to him. Properly, this time. No rambling, no cutting him off. An actual conversation.

You’ve got this, she told herself once more. She hugged her parents goodbye, walking with purpose out the door, to the bus stop. No running, no rushing; she was perfectly on time, as usual. Yes, this was going to be a good year. She was going to have a great first day!

She was going to talk to Connor.

Alana Beck's summer was terrible. Her anxiety is strong as ever, she is mourning her grandmother, she is (as always) all alone in a crowd. But it's the start of senior year and she has a plan: actually talk to Connor Murphy. Her grandmother always urged her to tell him how she feels. Now if only she could muster up the nerve.

Unfortunately, events are far past Alana's control and she's thrown into a spiral of grief once more.
