Episode 3 of Conlang Conflict is this Saturday at 12:00 p.m. Pacific! This is the final regular season dust up between Team Conlangery and Team LangTime Studio. This will determine who goes to the championship. Currently, the standings look like this:

Team Let's Have a Bouba: 1-1

Team Conlangery: 0-1

Now, if Team Conlangery wins and we have a three-way tie, the first tie breaker is game points. Here is the points standing at the moment:

Team LangTime Studio: 332

Team Conlangery: 109

If Team Conlangery wins, then Team LangTime Studio needs at least 80 points to guarantee a spot in the final. Team Conlangery has a tougher row to hoe. They'll have to get 303 points to be ahead of Team Let's Have a Bouba or beat Team LangTimeStudio by at least 224 points. Beyond that, we go to the final round tie breaker, where Team LangTimeStudio has an edge over Team Let's Have a Bouba by getting the top answer to all 5 questions to 4 for Team Let's Have a Bouba.

hey i like your art, have you ever messed about with transients and filtering to try and make some of the e(v|bh)or consonants as sounds?

Thank you! Also I've never heard about that; I suppose you mean something like creating a voice synthesizer? I have the phonology of their language defined according to linguistic terminology and using the IPA, alongside other things on a wiki that runs on my computer, it looks like this:

this is the current version, the old version was essentially the same thing, but much more convoluted as I tried to use consonant/vowel harmony as a way to create room for sound change and make a language I could evolve into various dialects, then daughter languages; Things were not defined clearly as I wanted to have it feel like Proto-Indo-European, but then as I started developing the world more and more and felt like I wanted to use the Ebhor's language to write things like myths and poetry from their perspective, and a "mysterious not fully known proto-language" wouldn't do, so I had to start again from a more well-defined proto-language.

I think a voice synth (if that's what you mean) would be cool if I wanted to have a faithful representation of a highly non-human anatomy and have sounds that are unpronounceable by humans, but that was never the case; instead, I want my constructed languages to feel naturalistic and be fully usable by real-world people like myself; When I want to convey that some people from my world have long snouts or beaks, I can give their language many series of closely-articulated sounds that would be easier for them to distinguish than for us (such as having /t͡ʃ,c,k,q/ on the same language, even though those already occur on some real-world languages); Maybe I can omit labial consonants like /m,p,b/ because they don't really have lips or something; Maybe I can use bidental consonants; The thing is, all of these can be accurately represented through the IPA and pronounced by real-world people, which is really cool when you think about it, suddenly these languages spoken by aliens is not too different from our languages and their experience of the world is not too different from our experience of the world =)

I have plans to maybe do a showcase video for this language, which would include reading words/phrases/text but first I need to finish the morphology and syntax, as I'm still not fully satisfied with it.

conlang thoughts (for when i’ve time to actually start working on this)

i think we all know this is going to have a very strong I Took Typology I and Loved It and Now I Wanna Try Out E v e r y t h i n g vibe

honestly, this lecture was so much work but i fucking loved it

once i figure out the phonphon details, i could rewrite a basic top-down parser so it creates valid words. that could be so handy if i get stumped coming up with some of the vocabulary

although i also definitely wanna include some historical development stuff regarding the vocab

i don’t know a lot about about historical linguistics and language change... but damn i wish i would

when will i finally be able to take a lecture on that

actually, speaking of parsers... wouldn’t it be really cool if i came up with a (mostly) working phrase structure grammar while creating the conlang... so i could actually parse sentences...

i do realize that there’s an obvious problem with nat langs likely being type-1/context-sensitive and the parsers i know only being able to handle type-2/context-free languages

plus there’s of course also the fact that there is no perfect modelled grammar for an actual natural language

and idk syntax, while definitely interesting, was not my favourite subject so far

also: no idea how applicable the syntactic approaches we’ve learnt are to non-pie langs (or even non-germanic langs. or even languages other than english and german.)

So I had a sudden urge to figure out what could become of the Venetian language in a future where it doesn’t go extinct. And the result is probably just a lot of fantasy grammar with a realisticly derived lexicon and that’s all. But it looks so cool! LOOK AT IT
