ANT-MAN, REPORT BACK
SPOILERS BELOW
UHHH, I’m like the worst person to ask because I! Have! No! Critical thinking skills when it comes to Marvel films (or any films, really). It felt kind of uneven—is it a superhero origin story? A different superhero origin story? A heist movie? A drama about family relationships? Apparently all of those and then some. Smarter people than I have already critiqued the fact that Janet Van Dyne is deceased at the start of the movie/essentially fridged to further Pym’s storyline (apparently Pym also has some shady shit in his past stories; I don’t know enough about the comics to say so).
Paul Rudd essentially played himself; Evangeline Lilly was great and will be a welcome addition to MCU; SAM WILSON was an unexpected but happy addition; and Michael Peña (along with David Dastmalchian and T.I.) stole the show. Honestly, Cassie Lang was the best part of the whole movie and I think Marvel should just turn Young Avengers into a thing.
POST CREDITS SCENES: #1, so apparently Hope Van Dyne is going to become Wasp in the future? Which is really exciting and I’m looking forward to seeing that happen. #2, um, obviously, THE SCENE. It was 15 seconds long, which, come on, Feige. I’m reading conflicting reports online: some summaries say that Steve and Sam find Bucky in a warehouse, and others report that Steve and Sam are keeping Bucky, uh, hostage (What? Why?). Also, it’s apparently a cut scene by the Russos from Civil War. I assume it’s after the start, since they’re already talking about “the accords” (AKA SRA?).
Take away message: all thirty to fifty extra pounds that Sebastian Stan gained are visible in that scene. He looks thick. And amazing. As my tags state, “slamming thighs and bedroom eyes.”
EDIT: Also, Peggy Carter and Howard Stark were in it for a hot second (John Slattery Howard Stark, not Dominic Cooper, sadly). Hayley Atwell showed that, even as older Peggy, she is still amazing and can hold a man back while remaining flawless and poised.
