“Aww, it’s so late,” I said, looking at the clock, which read 2am. “Never mind. I won’t do it. They’re probably asleep.”
I lay back, attempting to get cozy in bed, but it seemed impossible. No position appears comfortable even though I was fast asleep a moment ago dreaming of them.
Riding our bikes side by side through the neighborhood, we headed to my favorite ice cream parlor. Their bike was silver and gold, their favorite colors. Mine was purple and black, my favorite colors. Our hair blew in the wind as we raced to our destination.
“We have to get there before it closes! I need my ice cream!” I yelled.
“Don’t worry!” they said. “We’ll get there before they close.”
The next thing I knew, they sprinted forward, picking up the pace and leaving me several feet behind.
“Wait for me!” I hollered.
“Come on, come on!” they hollered at me over their shoulder.
I never caught up with them. They were moving too fast, but when I got to the ice cream parlor, they were already sitting inside waiting for me with two large bowls of ice cream.
“Hey, you! You’ve finally made it,” they said. “Here, I’ve got your favorite. Brown sugar cookie dough … right?”
The confidence they exuded, followed by the immediate hesitation, was just adorable. I couldn’t help but laugh.
“Right,” I answered.
“Well, have a seat and dig in. We’ve only got a few minutes.”
“Okay,” I said, walking to the table, but the more I walked, the further and further the table became. I was so confused. I didn’t bike there for nothing. I wanted that ice cream so badly, and I wanted to spend time with that special person even more. So, I started running, but that didn’t help. Eventually, I could barely see them, but I could hear them calling after me in the distance.
That’s when I woke up.
Even though I didn’t consider it a nightmare, it still ended up being an unpleasant dream that made me long for the attention of a certain someone. But it was late, and I didn’t want to wake them. So, I just lay there staring at the ceiling, hoping I’d fall asleep eventually, when, surprisingly, my phone rang.
“Hello?” I answered.
“Hey,” said the one person I couldn’t get off my mind. “I know it’s late, but I just wanted to hear your voice. Wanted to make sure you’re okay.”
I couldn’t count the number of times my heart did a flip! My cup overflowed with pure happiness.
“Aww! Yeah, I’m okay. I was just thinking about you. Is everything okay?” I asked.
“Yeah, everything is fine. It’s just …” they were silent for a moment before responding with, “I just had this strange dream about us. We were on our bikes on our way to get ice cream, but … it didn’t pan out the way I thought it would.”
“Oh?” I was stunned. Was I actually hearing them correctly? Their dream sounded similar to mine.
They continued, “You know, to rectify a terrible ending to a dream, I think we should meet up tomorrow and actually get ice cream – but I’m driving and will pick you up!”
I giggled. “Yeah, that sounds great, and I agree. Picking me up and riding together in a car sounds better than you leaving me behind on a bike.”
There was silence for a moment, and I thought they had fallen asleep on me.
“Hello? You still there?” I asked.
“Do you believe in soulmates?” they asked.
I grinned from ear to ear. Before tonight, I don’t think I believed in soulmates. I don’t ever think the question was posed to me until now, but after tonight, I am a believer. A happy one at that.
Author’s Note: Sorry I’m posting this late! Didn’t see it until the wee hours of the night. Such a cute prompt, though! As soon as I saw it, I knew it was the one. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and as always, comments, likes, and reblogs are welcome.
