I feel like once again the script writers intended this to be Paul being kind of a dick playboy but Bill Hopper took one look at it and was like what if instead I played this like Gertie and I are gay besties and then he did it with so much charm and likeability than the writers could imagine
This also really aligns with my wife and I's budding headcanon that Paul was the midcentury equivalent of a wellness girlie who is always into the latest diet and exercise trends heehee
The Case of The Moth-Eaten Mink
Perry takes Della out to dinner and mayhem ensues. Waitress gets shot at, run over and then disappears from the hospital. Restaurateur gives Perry a story, a mink coat that Della wears out of the restaurant, and a thousand dollar retainer. Perry sleeps alone.
This is the first episode that was shot although it was the 13th one that was aired. (Raymond Burr was given a brand new haircut fit for a 14-year-old boy.)
The morning after the fateful dinner at Morey's, Perry enters his office and the reception area is crowded. There are clients, a woman and a man, to his right as he walks in. The door behind Gertie is open to reveal an office where someone is seated at a desk. Perry greets a man, John(?) seated in the foreground who's reading a magazine and has his hat resting on the coffee table in front of him. Perry says good morning to Gertie and enters into Della's Domain TM where another woman, Terri, an employee carrying papers, is walking in the opposite direction. Della is standing behind her desk and tells him that Jackson left the Williams memorandum for his approval.
Since this is the first episode, the producers are showing us just how successful Perry is. He has at least 5 employees: Della, Jackson, Gertie, Terri, and the person in the office behind Gertie. Since he greets the nearly unseen man as he walks through reception, I'm going to say that he's one of Paul's operatives because he's known to Perry but if he were an employee he'd be at a desk, not waiting in reception.

Gertie!
Some photos I've never seen before
Gertie, played by Connie Cezon, was heard more than she was seen on Perry Mason. She appeared in only 18 episodes. Her last appearance was in the 1958 episode, The Case of the Terrified Typist. That episode is one of the three episodes in which Perry Mason lost his case.
