Final Rosewood Chronicles Book!
I finally got my copy of Princess Ever After about 10 mins ago and I'm honestly still in shock. I've been reading these books for about 4-5 years, having picked up the 1st one cause i thought it looked interesting and I liked Connie’s Channel., These books have been with me through hard times and in moments where i felt like i had no one all i had to do was pick up one of these books and i would feel better. These books are my lifeline and i dont know what i would do without them honestly. Connie, if you ever somehow see this, i just want to say thank you. Thank you for creating such a wonderful world filled with wonderful characters and for helping me to escape xx
lollie dribble
the sunset is golden and pink. it illuminates the palace walls and coats lottie and ellie in a thick, glossy glaze of golden honey. it reminds lottie of her mother for some reason she can’t quite place; maybe the gentle glow of the sun nestling behind distant snow-capped mountains, or the quiet breeze that ruffles the two girls’ hair ever so slightly. her mum would’ve loved it in maradova. all their fairytale stories come to life in a big burst of sudden fate.
lottie glances to ellie, whose head is lost in the fluffy, flaxen-tinted clouds that stream above them like a cozy blanket. the setting sun paints golden syrup streaks in her hair and across her face, illuminating the light dusting of freckles across her cheeks that only really seem to appear in the gleaming maradovian sun. her eyes dart to her lips, pink and pursed, remembering how soft (yet chapped) they’d been when they had kissed the sugar off of each other.
that kiss makes some part of lottie shudder in embarrassment each time she thinks about it. a reflex, maybe. something that was never meant to happen. a mistake. because ellie had said it herself, this time last year. she was only messing around. it was a joke. and yet, there was something in ellie’s eyes when their lips had touched then parted again, something lottie had never seen in her princess before. bordering on an animalistic kind of emotion; a strong and ancient ache for another person. for lottie. surely it couldn’t have been a joke. ellie wasn’t that cruel. she was annoying and rude and childish but she wasn’t cruel. she would never play with lottie’s feelings like that, she knew that for definite. she’d seen the way her princess’ demeanour had flashed almost dangerously when jamie had shouted at her. hell, she’d even swung at saskia, a trained bodyguard, screaming like a banshee barefoot in the snow. ellie was bad at reading and understanding emotions, but like how even the bitterest of winters turn to glorious summers, she wasn’t cruel. she was just confused and ran from her feelings a lot, something lottie could understand.
after reasoning this all out in her mind, lottie straightens her crescent moon tiara and, inhaling deeply, reminding herself to be brave, she says, “did it really mean nothing?”
the princess plummets from wherever she was in her daydreams back down to her bedroom balcony and very nonchalantly, in true ellie fashion, hums a, “hmm?”
“the kiss.” lottie swallows hard as the other girl’s dark eyes meet hers. “did it really mean nothing?”
“did it mean something to you?”
a year ago, lottie would’ve cried at the harshness of the question, the way it tumbled out so cruelly out of ellie’s mouth and slashed through her heart like it was butter. but lottie has changed since a year ago. she’s been kidnapped, tied up, been held practically hostage. all for ellie. everything’s for ellie. and ellie blames herself for all of it. and ellie didn’t mean to unleash such an uncaged beast loose on the maradovian princess’ balcony. she’s just bad at emotions. lottie can relate to that.
the sky deepens, now a peach haze, almost as if they were residing inside an oil painting.
“did it not mean something to you?” lottie concentrates so hard on not letting any emotion creep into her voice. christ, how does jamie do this all the time?
ellie whips herself all the way around, now facing her portman face on, expression the complete opposite of the lullaby of a sky. “what do you mean?”
lottie can’t help but laugh slightly. it leaves an awful ache in her chest doing so, but seeing ellie so wild yet so vulnerable is a sight. tight face and clenched fists, and fear. lottie knows what fear looks like on ellie, because she’s awfully bad at hiding it.
“it’s ok if it didn’t.” lottie reassures her, reaching back into history, calling upon her mother and liliana, two of the kindest, bravest, most unstoppable women she knows, to give her the strength to say: “but it meant something to me.” she doesn’t add: i think.
because she’s pretty sure. binah and lola helped her figure it all out. something about ellie makes everything inside her jumble up in a euphoric trance. her knight, her princess, her most best friend in all the world. the girl who’s gone to hell and back with her; who would risk everything for her, even though it’s meant to be the other way around.
she watches in a hopeful curiosity as ellie’s face melts like kissed-off sugar into a trademark scowl, then a not-so-familiar sheepish smile. it writhes on her face like a thrashing snake, scared and out of place, ellie not used to having no witty comeback or not shoving someone away. eventually, though, it settles, and in the golden oil-painting gauze of an evening, ellie takes lottie’s hands. it will always surprise the latter of how delicate they are, even with chipped black nail polish.
lottie can feel her mum put a strong hand on her shoulder. be kind, be brave, be unstoppable. a mantra that will follow her to her grave; a mantra that has gotten her through everything.
ellie has never been one for sentiment, which is why it doesn’t faze lottie in the slightest when she pulls her in closer, so close she can see each sunlit freckle and each scar on her face and even see her reflection in the dark, deep depths of her eyes.
lottie’s princess rests her head on her chest, and in the sticky sunset, they dance a slow box-step for the whole of the kingdom of maradova to see: two girls being young and reckless and falling in love.
