Talking Points | Liverpool FC 1 - 2 Wolverhampton Wanderers

3 In a Row... | 

That’s 3 game at Anfield in the last week and 3 losses. While maybe you’d have forgiven the Reds for slipping up against Swansea if they’d come out beaten Southampton and hammered Wolves but right now you’ve got to ask, what the hell is going on? I called Swansea our worst performance of the season, then I called Southampton one of the top 3 worst of the season and now I’m calling this in our top 3 worst under Jurgen Klopp as a whole. The defence were open and stretched, the attack was toothless and the midfield was about as agile as a dead horse. 

Dead Wood Still Lingers | 

Which brings me to this point. Klopp did well to strip away a lot of dead wood in the Summer but at present, some still remains and still comes back to haunt us every so often. The image of Connor Randall desperately trying to find any sort of speed when being counter attacked for the second goal and calling for offside despite being a good 25 yards from the ball about sums him up. If Liverpool are to press on and win trophies over coming seasons, players like this need to just be sold, given away or just locked in a room somewhere so they can’t play for the first team. 

Same Old Same Old at the Back | 

Gift a free kick in the first minute, fail to track a runner (Origi), fail to come off your line and catch the ball (Karius) and concede a goal from yet another set piece.. Good one Liverpool. If that wasn’t bad enough how about, attack, fail to use the ball properly, pass it side to side, mess it up, get countered, give the keeper no chance while your left back has decided he wants to play striker, concede. Good one Liverpool. These errors are becoming far too prominent in the Reds play and the second goal scored by Wolverhampton has become something the Reds need to address massively. We’ve already seen Burnley, Bournemouth, West Ham, Swansea, Southampton and plenty of other sides score in that manner against the Reds by sitting deep and springing forward with pace and Klopp must change something in his system to provide his back four more cover. 

Failure to Break Down Low Block Continues |

Left to right, right to left, left to right and side to side. Sounds more like an awful 80s dance track than a footballing tactic but it’s exactly what we’ve seen Liverpool do for this entire month. In fact, the Reds have been so out of ideas that they’ve genuinely only scored goals this month resulting from corners and crosses. No seriously, go back and watch the goals. Both Sturridge and Mane’s strikes against Sunderland resulted from corners, Lucas nodded in a corner at Plymouth, Origi’s goal against Wolves came off a corner, Firmino’s double against Swansea both came from crosses and last but not least, Pogba’s dabbed handball to gift Milner a penalty goal at Old Trafford came from a corner originally too. The Reds have still created chances from open play but the fact that teams are sitting deep makes it impossible for the Reds to get in behind and run at teams, negating where they’re at their most effective. Crossing is a legitimate form of football but when your first choice centre forward is 5 foot 11 you’re not particularly going to have huge amounts of joy. 

Next 3 Home Games to be Vital | 

Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal. Liverpool’s next 3 home games are going to be absolutely vital to the Reds season. Take 0 points and we’re practically confirmed to be out of the title race and probably out of the Top 4. Take 5-9 and we’re still at least in with a shout of the Champions League spots. When you’ve just lost your previous 3 to a Championship side, a team who were last on the table and a mid table side then you can be forgiven for not having too much confidence but all is not lost yet. Sadio Mane is returning from AFCON after Senegal were knocked out while the top teams will come to Anfield and actually play football, allowing Liverpool to play their way, rather than coming up against buses parked straight across the opposition box. This next month is going to be huge and while I’m doing my best to be confident you can certainly colour me a little worried right now.
