'The calm before the storm' The Beano Review
Expectations can be a very funny thing, when you’re not expecting much you will usually be pleasantly surprised and when you’re expecting a lot you sometimes get disappointing. I am guilty of having my mind made up before coming to see a piece of theatre so this time around I didn’t prejudge and I kept an open mind. What I saw was the opening night of The Beano and in most parts it was clear that this was the first performance.
I found the first half of the performance to be very entertaining and the actors did a great job of keeping the energy and pace up and didn’t drop the ball. I loved the overwhelming sense of comedy that was in the performance, I’m glad that it wasn’t a very emotional piece. The second half of the show went down hill, there were uncomfortable silences where actors were not on stage when they were meant to be and because certain things hadn’t been rehearsed, this made it very awkward to watch so much so that I felt like running on stage and helping the actors out. Lewis Johnstone and Erol Uzunhasan were the stand out performers throughout, they had brilliant energy and commitment and completely stole the show for me. Josh Lane and Lara Welch also did very well in their roles.
The end scene of the performance was the most powerful scene but it could have been much more hard hitting if it weren’t for the faults in the build up to it. It was a shame that the second act didn’t go as aswell as the first act but I saw a lot of potential and a great show in the making.
