Sherman Robertson's obituary will probably mention that he recorded a song on Paul Simon's Graceland, and no doubt his career was boosted by that happy circumstance. In down to earth Houston terms, he was a student of Conrad Johnson. (via Sherman Robertson 'My Linda Loo' at KUHT 2-11-03)
#56 Thunder Soul
Conrad Johnson took the high school jazz band to a whole different level. Not only did they deviate from the traditional songs, they played soul music, the music of the time and gave performances instead of the routine boring recitals. This movie not only serves to tell the story of this cool high school band and their reunion years later, but what connected me the most was the influence of 70's soul, r&b music to the culture of the school. The most important part is that this band was actually talented. They could really play some tunes. The joy and purity of bringing the band back together is poetic especially since just a few days after their performance the conductor Conrad Johnson past away. Sometimes documentaries could be more inspiring than a fictional one.
