LIGHTEDCLOUDS SAID: MAYBE THEY ARE IN HEAT? MY YOUNGER DOG STARTED MATURING AND DISTURBING MY OLDER ONE AND THEY JUST, NON-STOP BARKED. A TRIP TO THE VET MIGHT HELP. OTHER THAN THAT I KINDA LEAVE SOME LIGHTS ON FOR MY DOGS SO THAT THEY WON’T BE ANXIOUS :)
Both dogs are neutered, and I’ve tried the light thing as well. I haven’t taken him to the vet, I need to anyway, so I’ll try that. :)
does anyone have any tips for me when it comes to an older dog that won’t stop barking at night?
it only just started a month ago. king barks like mad, making booker join in and freaking him out in the process. it seems like no matter what i do, king won’t stop; i’ve tried putting music on, giving extra attention, more walks, etc.
last night was the worst, and i know the thunderstorm was part of it. usually, king is never bothered by them enough to want to bark. first thing he does is go into his kennel. last night though he wanted out. and honestly, i didn’t get up at all, hoping that would send the message that i wasn’t going to come running every time he barks. because before, i’d let him out thinking he was getting sick and going to puke everywhere. but he’d just roam around the yard tail wagging and happy as can be.
i’m not going to start letting him have late night patrols - i already go to bed at 2, and the last time i let both dogs out is around 1:30, giving them time to do some business and chill out. and, i let king have an hour outside by himself every night so he gets a break from booker (who’s only about 3 now...still a puppy in lab years). and the last ten minutes before i go to bed, i make sure the dogs are chill and have had water.
it’s making the entire household miserable. i go to bed every night wondering how much sleep i’ll be allowed to have until king starts barking. mom and i barely slept at all last night, and booker has circles under his eyes.
my aunt suggested just letting him sleep outside the kennel from now on - and i’m considering it. he is old, and has hip problems (we do give him vitamins for it). maybe he no longer feels safe in the kennel.
