Official apology to everyone I interact with for the way trauma has shaped me I promise I'm working on it but it is slow.
“This is it.” The thief thought as his assailant raised a crooked blade to finish him off. As the blade descended towards the thief, his world started slowing down as his fate approached him, and even so, his mind wandered towards the noble that managed to occupy his mind. “He better have escaped.”
Thud!
As the assassin fell, the thief looked up towards his savior, expecting another member of the guild, and gasped as he took in the noble’s appearance, what used to be impeccable and regal was now in tatters and made him look at home with the city’s beggars, in his hands was the biggest book he had ever seen but what really surprised the thief was the sneer on his face as the noble looked down on the unconscious body. That appearance suited him more than the thief would’ve expected when he first laid eyes on the noble.
“Are you okay?” The prince asked as he helped the thief up and helped carry the thief’s weight when his knees buckled. The rogue nodded as he checked his savior for any injuries, letting out a breath he hadn’t realized he held when he couldn’t find any. “I’m happy that I made it time, I thought that I was too late.” He said as he looked into the thief’s eyes as they stumbled out of the room in direction of the base’s escape route.
“Well I’m pissed off that you didn’t escape when we were attacked, but I’ll save my anger for after we escape.” The thief responded, heart pounding in what he thought was exertion as they avoid the sounds of scuffles all around the hideout. “Do you know if anyone managed to escape?”
“I don’t know, I wasn’t exactly paying attention when I went looking for you.” He answered while he stopped at an intersection, listening for any assailants. “I was extremely worried about you, I-we couldn’t lose you, you’re the most important part of this operation.” He continued after not finding anything.
He was right and that made it hurt so much, his family didn’t deserve to die like this, slaughtered in this hovel that they called a hideout, they deserved to die in a blaze of glory or at surrounded by their loved ones after a fulfilling life. It was all his own fault too, if he hadn’t recruited them, they wouldn’t be going through this.
“Stop.” Said the voice that cut through his thoughts. “Don’t you dare think that this is your fault, we both know that if you could, you would stop all of this. So please. Don’t torture yourself like this. You don’t deserve it, no one deserves this happening to them.” The noble said, the thief remained silent though, not knowing how to respond, deciding to pay attention to his surroundings instead and not on his companion
He could see their exit now, it wasn’t pretty though as it would take them through the sewers. His companion appeared to share this opinion if the grimace on his face was of any indication. He turned away when he noticed the prince turning his head towards him, almost missing the resolve that consolidated on his face. Opening the exit’s opening, they escaped into the night, away from the smell of blood and ash.
The pain was too much for any normal person to take, Claiden was swimming in and out of consciousness as his body agonized from the pain. He had started hallucinating again, this time the figure in front of his was a a skeletal figure who used shadows as a cloak, sometimes they were a winged human, when his body was in a better shape he would talk to the figures to stave off his loneliness. They would talk back to him about different things but today the figure was quiet. They really looked like a corpse.
The figure got up and put their hand on Claiden's shoulder and said, "You know what? Screw destiny I'm taking you out of here. You deserve to live." The figure turned their back to him. A scythe appeared on them as they stalked to the door. "I'll help you."
He woke up with a start when he heard the something break downstairs.
"What the hell?" Kyle muttered, mind racing from the sudden awakening. He crept out of his room and went in the direction of the staircase. When he arrived at the staircase, he tried to calm his heartbeat. He descended the stairs as quietly as he could. As he reached the living room his phone started ringing.
"Shit!" He said shouting as quietly he could. He picked up the call. "Hello?" He whispered.
"Is this Kyle Kabrini?" The caller asked, seemingly unperturbed by Bob's whispering.
"There has been a problem with containment and Kate Ciprino escaped captivity." The words came out of the phone and Bob started sweating heavily, trembling he tried to raise his phone but dropped it. Swearing he fumbled with his phone as he brought his phone to his ear.
"How did it happen?" he asked, voice cracking.
"We don't know. All the cameras malfunctioned, we assume that it was her magic."
"Don't the cameras have magic coating so they can't get damaged by magic?" He almost screamed into the phone. He was barely able to defeat her the first time, he doesn't have a chance of beating her.
"They do but they were overloaded and broke. We're sending some guards to protect you in case she goes after-" Kyle stopped listening when the cold piece of metal touched his head.
"Drop the phone." ordered a voice that brought tremors through his body. It was a cold voice filled with hate and disgust.
The phone hit the floor. "Why are you here?" He asked, trying not to stutter.
"Don't feign interest. You know the two things that you did." She said. "Stay on your knees."
Kyle complied, not wanting to die.
She went around him and sat on his favorite couch. He was puzzled by the bundle in her arm. It quickly turned into horror when the bundle started making baby noises, she had his son.
"Funny how they didn't tell me what happened to him when I was in jail. You didn't even have the basic human decency to tell me, not that it would have saved you now." She started playing with the baby. Bob tried to use this opportunity to his advantage to try to tackle her but his body didn't obey him, clenching itself as to not let him move.
---------------------------------------------------------
"Your body won't respond during your worst crisis." The young man muttered, cursing the one who shot him as he drew his last breath.
---------------------------------------------------------
"No way." He thought as an intense pain made itself known throughout his body.
"He looks like me, doesn't he?" She asked.
"Of course he does, he's our son." The suffering man forced out between clenched teeth.
"It's almost a pity that he'll grow without a father, but then again, he'll be a better person without you in the picture." With a wave of her hand the gun glowed as she pointed it at his face.
An Unexpected Reunion
I thought of so many ways I could reunite with my best friend, I just never thought our reunion would on opposing sides of the battlefield.
"Luke. What are you doing here?" I ask him, trying to wrap my head around the fact that he was fighting for the Corporation. He must be being blackmailed, why else would he be fighting for them? Why didn't he tell me? All he had to do is tell me the problem and I'll help him save whoever was captured.
"I want revenge for his death. I'm only doing a trade, my power for revenge on my brother's killer." Luke says, voice unwavering with a tone of rage and finality. "Both of us know that he was killed by someone in the royal family. Why are you helping them? You said that you would help me avenge my brother but here you are, working for the bastards that killed him."
"I'm trying to figure out who killed him, the entire family isn't to blame for this, only one person. Please stop this." I plead. "We can do this together, I'm almost there. Please stand down, I can't lose you too."
"Why should I stop when I'm close to my goal? You're my friend so I'll give you a choice, either you join me or I'll strike you down and continue my mission." He tells me, showing me that I can't help him.
"Sorry Luke but I can't stop now. I... I wish it didn't have to end it like this." With this, darkness forms around his stump as he lunges at me, a clawed hand grabbing the arm I use to try to block his advance.
