was outside earlier and a bird Came Up, squatted down, fluttered it’s wings at me and opened its mouth like a hatchling begging for food (it was a grown female) so I went and checked the seed cube in the feeder and the thing was completely covered in mold. this is one of the weirdest things that’s ever happened to me. how did she know im the one in charge of the birdseed. How Did She Know To Pantomime Hunger At Me. Hello.
i have spent my afternoon confusedly getting dressed, driving to the store, purchasing a new seed block, driving home, washing the cage, and getting the feeder set back up. i don’t take this much care for my Own nutrition. ive been bullied into a grocery store run by a tufted titmouse. i feel so loved
“everyone is mad at me and they just won’t tell me” —> “no one has said anything about being mad at me and i haven’t done anything to warrant being mad at so if someone is silently fuming about me and not saying anything that’s their problem and actually quite weird of them and i can effortlessly move on with my life”
this took SUCH a huge deal of unlearning because, like so many of you, i came out of a home where being quietly in trouble WAS the default state, and i DID grow up not just with the assumption but borderline religious conviction that Everyone Is Mad At Me, I Am Bad, I Must Exist In A Constant State of Attempting to Pacify The Natural Rage I Inspire In Everyone. and no it actually turns out that my family are the freaks . and yours are too
“this isn’t true because i DEFINITELY silently fume at people in the hopes they’ll figure out what they did and apologize” that’s not good. you shouldn’t do that
“this isn’t true because the ex-friendship that traumatized me ended explosively after they were mad at me and never told me why” that’s not good. they shouldn’t be doing that
“i don’t think this is true because my current friend group is constantly icing me out until i figure out what ive done to upset them and properly apologized without being told” hey thats not good. they should not be doing that
if the peacefulness of your relationship with someone (familial, romantic, friendly, anything) can be destroyed by effective communication/asking them for effective communication, you have got to get out of there. if you can’t get out of there, you’ve got to throw away any ideas about what that person thinks of you because they have their own shit to figure out before they can accurately read anyone else

OP: The weather is unbearably hot, but running the AC all the time leaves me weak. Any solutions?
Cnetizens: Get a winter melon, lie on a bamboo mat and cuddle it to sleep.
OP: Here’s my experience from last summer. Temperatures in Shanghai stayed above 35°C through July and August last year. I almost never turn on the air conditioner at night, only run a fan. Waking up soaked from the heat was pretty normal. Then I roll over, and my arms and legs touch something nice and cool. It’s not that sharp shocking cold that makes you shudder just really pleasant. What’s more it holds a steady cool temperature. No matter how long I hug it, it barely warms up. Once my skin moves away from its surface it cools down quickly again. It regulates itself surprisingly well. You don’t need to worry about it turning lukewarm.
Pros Great at keeping a constant cool temperature energy-free totally silent thick rind means it lasts a long time up to three months multi-purpose you can even hold it while doing squats or use it as a barrier so you don’t roll off the bed. Cons You’ll reek of vegetable odour after sleeping all night with it. You can’t eat it afterwards. Don’t get any ideas about turning it into a stuffed winter melon bowl. Don’t ask how I found out. It’s really heavy. Getting it home from the market is tough and throwing it away later is just as much hassle. The inside turns completely mushy watery pulp so you have no choice but to dump it. AC and electric fans can be found in nearly every household across China, yet not everyone likes keeping the AC running nonstop. Some people with extremely weak constitutions cannot stand air conditioning at all, nor can they bear constant airflow. That’s why people have come up with all sorts of ways to beat the heat.
Winter melons are 96% water. Their surface stays several degrees cooler than the surrounding air, so sleeping with one in your arms is basically hugging a natural cold water pack. As long as the rind stays intact, you can use it all summer. Just watch out for ruptures — if it splits open, all the liquid inside leaks out. Using winter melons to beat the heat has been a folk custom in China since ancient times.
There’s also the zhufuren竹夫人(literally bamboo lady, aka bamboo wife), a similar popular cooling tool. It’s a hollow cylindrical cage woven from thin bamboo strips. Air flows freely through its gaps, carrying heat away nonstop.
Chinese people had plenty of other clever ways to stay cool. In 1978, the bronze jian fou was unearthed from the Marquis Yi of Zeng’s tomb in Suizhou, Hubei. Dating back over 2,400 years, it’s China’s ancient version of a refrigerator. Ice went in the outer vessel, and wine was stored inside the inner container.
The Tang Dynasty had cool pavilions built next to water. Waterwheels channeled cool air indoors. Some even pumped water up to the rooftops to create artificial water curtains. The cooling trick relied on waterwheels spinning fans paired with flowing water.
By the Tang Dynasty, plenty of icy treats already existed. The most famous one was su shan酥山, an icy dairy confection. Modern researchers have worked out its general recipe. First, heat dairy cream until it nearly melts and turns soft. Drip it onto a plate to shape it like rolling mountains, then store it in an ice cellar to freeze solid.
Song Dynasty people enjoyed frozen drinks too. Records of the Eastern Capital’s Dreams documents summer treats sold in Bianjing, the Northern Song capital.
Cold treats grew far more diverse in the Song Dynasty. Historical records show that as early as 962, the third year of the Jianlong reign—the exact timeframe featured in Where Winds Meet—the imperial court set up the Bingjingwu冰井务(Ice Well Service), an official department dedicated to making cold food for summer relief. Every summer the government handed out these icy delicacies to officials to help them beat the heat. Booming Song Dynasty commerce gradually made cold drinks accessible to ordinary people, and the variety of icy treats available to civilians expanded greatly. Documents note three major cold drink shops operating in Kaifeng, capital of the Northern Song, selling a huge range of refreshments including bingxue(icy snow), cold congee soup, licorice decoction, preserved papaya, fresh papaya, chilled lychee paste, golden tangerine balls, snow foam spleen-soothing drink, elsholtzia beverage, perilla drink, cold rice wine drink, soapberry syrup, sweet soybean candy, mung bean water, brined plum drink, jiangcha tea, Wuling San herbal mix, Dashun San herbal mix, lychee cream and snow foam plum wine. The most common cold drink back then was bingxue冰雪❄️, comparable to modern ice pops. In winter Song people filled bronze basins with water mixed with sugar, sometimes fruit juice and plant gel, and left them outdoors to freeze solid. These blocks were then stored in ice cellars. The following summer they would cut the frozen slabs into chunks or carve them into animal shapes such as dogs and foxes to sell at cold drink shops.
Street vendors also sold frothy soybean drink, pear juice, plum syrup, ginger honey water and papaya nectar. The menu rivals today’s trendy bubble tea shops. Vendors set up stalls everywhere — at street corners, alley entrances and bridge crossings.
My local animal shelter (BARCS) just got an influx of 369 birds from a shitass pet store, which is a truly terrifying number of parrots to have inside a building. BUT: there's a donation drive going on right now where you can vote for a pet's face to go on a beer can for their annual BARCStoberfest. Every single vote is a dollar towards animal rescue!!!

You guys rlly don't realise how much knowledge is still not committed to the internet. I find books all the time with stuff that is impossible to find through a search engine- most people do not put their magnum opus research online for free and the more niche a skill is the less likely you are to have people who will leak those books online. (Nevermind all the books written prior to the internet that have knowledge that is not considered "relevant" enough to digitise).
Whenever people say that we r growing up with all the world's knowledge at our fingertips...it's not necessarily true. Is the amount of knowledge online potentially infinite? Yes. Is it all knowledge? No. You will be surprised at the niche things you can discover at a local archive or library.

A patient, explaining what their relationship is to their new visitor who was headed up to see them, said, “he’s my guardian,” and I said “oh I didn’t you had a legal guardian,” and the patient said, “he’s not my legal guardian, he’s my spiritual and physical guardian. that sure is a word salad you just put on display there
Please explain to me how hardcore radical Islam or the Russian Orthodox Church are the fault of Western Europe.
"Hardcore Radical Islam" - the US overthrew secular, progressive, elected governments in Iran and Afghanistan in the 20th century in the name of resource theft and stopping socialism. The mujahideen, which later formed the basis of Taliban, was directly armed and funded by the US to fight against the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan and the Soviet Union from 1979 to 1989. The CIA and US State Dept. directly funded other fundamentalist wahabbi groups during the Cold War as a way to combat secular socialism and communism. The US is currently funding and arming extremist Islamist groups in Syria as well, such as the al-Nusra Front and Tahrir al-Sham. Saudi Arabia, one of the United States' biggest allies in the Middle East which currently enjoys the generous patronage of the US arms and petrochemical industries and hasn't had a single sanction placed on it in the name of "democracy" despite literally being an absolute monarchy, also spends exorbitant sums to propagate fundamentalist salafist interpretations of Islam, is one of the biggest financial supporters of al Qaeda, and was literally complicit in 9/11. Additionally, the destabilization of Iraq and Syria through U.S. interventions laid the groundwork for the rise of ISIS, which is essentially a U.S. asset by keeping swathes of the Middle East destabilized and staging terrorist attacks that create the justification for further U.S. military presence in the region.
Russian Orthodox Church - the fall of communism in Russia and other Eastern European states essentially devoured the social fabric of those countries and left millions of people to fester in abject misery, crime, corruption and poverty. The Orthodox Church and other religious organizations which had previously been kept in check by the secular socialist governments filled the void left by the collapse of virtually every social safety net that existed during communist rule. The current oligarch-nationalist-Orthodox alliance that rules Russia was directly set up by the U.S. through interference in the 1996 Russian elections to ensure Boris Yeltsin would be elected president over the Communist Party candidate; Yeltsin would later essentially handpick Putin as his successor. A similar pattern can be seen in other former Eastern bloc countries, such as Poland, where the U.S. supported the right-wing, strongly Catholic trade union Solidarity in the 80s, which would later form the basis for Poland's current far right, homophobic ruling party Law and Justice, and Hungary, where the U.S. supported the "liberal" student organization Fidesz, which is today Viktor Orban's fascist anti-LGBTQ, anti-immigrant ruling party.
Anti-LGBT movement in Romania is literally founded by neoprotestant USA religious folks tho. The Romanian Orthodox church may be homophobic AF, but it's a lazy, satiated wolf most of the time. The neoprotestants organize tho
Entire swathes of neocolonized territory in Eastern Europe, Asia, LatAm and especially Africa have essentially become playgrounds for American "evangelicals" (read: theocratic fascists) to export their venomously anti-LGBT, anti-feminist "movements" after they fail in the States. They take their anger at being made irrelevant and impotent in the imperial core out on queer people, women and religious minorities in the periphery and Global South. Supremely evil shit.

For movie night we watched The Lychee Road (orig. 长安的荔枝) (2025), directed by Da Peng.
The movie was falsely advertised to me as a lighthearted comedy about a hapless government official trying to fulfill an impossible imperial decree (somehow transport fresh lychees from Lingnan to Chang'an in time for a consort's birthday). It started with us giggling and ended with my partner and one of my friends sobbing, and me getting really angry about the United States.
All the manpower. The resources. The money. The deaths. The injuries. The damage to nature. The enslavement of entire populations and for what? To get CHEAP FRUIT on our table? CHEAP FRUIT WE WON'T EVEN NECESSARILY EAT?? I'm like getting so angry and pacing in the living room, like we are so disgusting. We are a vile nation. Just a massive machine of pain and blood and anguish all in the service of shitting out treats
I got so mad I forgot to comment on the movie itself. Liked it sure here's an apt review
sometimes it occurs to me that while "get bottom surgery and then use a strapon" is an obvious course of action for many trans lesbians, a lot of cis people would be extremely confused by the suggestion that someone would do this.
