Delinquency During Puberty: The Possible Causes

Delinquency during puberty can be due to many factors, both from social connections and from biological changes in a teenager’s body. I would say both Containment Theory and Social Bond Theory, together, could help explain some of the issues of delinquency during this age and how it declines as the teenager becomes an adult, moving to the next stage of their life with more commitments and stability. As an adult they have more to lose if they repeat their behaviors from their teenage years.

Hagan (2011) states: “Containment Theory basically holds that individuals have various social controls (containments) that assist them in resisting pressures that draw them toward criminality” (Pg. 164.) Delinquency occurs when an individual breaks away from these social norms because of peer pressure and influences, feeling hopeless, no legal way to better one’s life, and various other internal and external factors.

Hagan (2011) says: “Social Bond Theory…states that delinquency takes place when a person’s bonds to society are weakened or broken, thus reducing personal stakes in conformity…{these bonds include:}…attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief” (Pg. 165.). This theory reminds us that we do conform to social norms of behavior to strengthen our bonds in our domestic lives, friendships, and working lives. And most of us would follow these norms, even if there was no legal punishment, because we need to feel loved, respected, and included in our groups (bonded.) When these bonds are somehow broken, an individual may rebel against the morals and values they were raised with. During puberty many teenagers feel isolated by changes in their lives (seeing themselves and their friends slowly becoming adults), which can be a frightening time. And some may be dealing with past abuse and other problems that affect them by rebelling against a society that they feel let them down.
