“The war will end, and leaders will shake hands, and the old lady will still wait for her martyred son, and that woman will wait for her beloved husband, and those children will wait for their heroic father. i don’t know who sold our homeland, but i know who paid the price.”
— Mahmoud Darwish
I think realistically World War 3 has already started. I think it started years ago, probably sometime in the middle of the 2010s.
I think our mistake has been in assuming that World War 3 would either be nuclear holocaust, or that it would be like the last two, with the enormous armies of world powers clashing on fields of battle and carnage. But war's changed. Modern armies aren't built to go out and do battle one another anymore, they're built to bully those who haven't got one.
This conflict will not be defined by the apocalypses of the Somme or of Stalingrad, it will be defined by a million little fires all over the planet that slowly but surely drag every one of us into inescapable economic ruin. An invasion here, a civil war there. Bombing campaigns that accomplish nothing but slaughter and spending. A leader kidnapped or assassinated whenever their enemies see an opportunity. This will not end with a bang. It will just peter out once everyone has run out of patience and money.

There's a trend among right-liberals (more commonly known as "conservatives") that I used to make fun of all the time back when I was a left-liberal where they make up some bogus conspiracy theory to explain away something politically inconvenient for them (e.g. "Those protestors were paid by George Soros!"), then they believe their own lies, then they ask themselves why they aren't also doing the thing they think the left (or "the left") is doing if it apparently works so well, then they attempt it, then it predictably blows up in their faces because this whole house of cards was built on a foundation of sand.
Anyway, I bring this up because Israel building military infrastructure in the heart of Tel Aviv after decades of accusing Palestinian liberation movements of using human shields is the sort of shit you get when a nation-state plays that game.
Imagine ending the world because you think the magic dude in the sky is gonna reward you for it only for it to turn out that said magic dude is a trans POC communist who you now gotta fight for in a seven year war against the embodiment of evil and his unholy legion of the undead.
Imagine that.
