Comic Explorer Perspective and Thoughts (First full listen-through since 2016 release)
The bad - “Miracle Worker” and “Next Stage With You” have nice melodies but the synth pads are so fucking awful and depressingly embarrassing. At the end of “Next Stage With You,” there’s a string synth in the background that I literally could create on my $120 Casio Synthesizer. “Miracle Worker” just sounds like it’s straight off of WAVE RUNNER, which is most certainly a bad thing for Perfume standards after the flawless production of JPN and LEVEL3. Also, I have never liked “Flash” or “Star Train” in either CE mix or single mix, so I always skip those two as well. Don’t even get me started on Baby Face.
The good - “Tokimeki Lights (CE Version)” and “Cling Cling (CE Version)” make the album worth coming back to, though. I just can’t get over how lackluster the first half of the album is, though. It’s worse than the first half of JPN!
Just being being snobby -
The concepts of structure and space seriously do not fit with my ideal aesthetic choices for Perfume. Nothing beats Triangle’s fuzzy, heavy sound for me or LEVEL3′s crisp, powerful sound. JPN has aged the best, but Cosmic Explorer is a leap backward to GAME’s production, but without the iconic hooks and memorable concepts.
[[[WARNING: KIND OF SAPPY]]]
I’ve been with Perfume since they released Dream Fighter EP in 2008 (and the epic video!!!). Triangle and JPN were pivotal albums for me during high school (secondary school), not only musically, but emotionally. LEVEL3 came out my senior (4th) year, and quickly became one of my favorite albums of all time by any artist. I hope Nakata never stops creating music that we can laugh to, cry with, sing with, and in which we can connect with other cultures and peoples across the world. “Dream Fighter” is still my favorite Perfume song of all time (followed by “1mm,” “VOICE,” “Unnatural Girl,” and “LTW”) and I will support to and listen to Perfume until I literally rot dead in my fucking casket.
Here’s to what’s next for Nakata and our 3 main bitches. (5 if you include Toshiko and Natsume!) #prfm
