The Vocaloid Opera that you’ve probably haven’t heard of

I’ve seen people use Hatsune Miku to cover ever kind of music imaginable, even songs from famous operas. As a Vocaloid enthusiast since 2014, i thought I had seen everything. But today I just found out that Miku has her own opera. It’s called The End, and it features music and lyrics composed by Keiichiro Shibuya, Miku’s tuning by Pinocchio-P (one of my favorite vocaloid producers of all time), and Miku’s costumes designed by Louis Vuitton because why the hell not.

It’s quite different from “opera” in the traditional sense since it does not consist of any human actors or live orchestra. It uses multiple projection screens similar to the ones used for the holograms in the MikuExpo concerts. Oh yeah, speaking of visuals, this opera is one of the trippiest fever dreams I have witnessed in recent memory. It’s like an acid trip dialed to 11 up in there. I’m quite certain all the weird visuals are supposed to have some deeper meaning but I don’t understand it all completely yet. I’m probably gonna need a few rewatches. (Jesus Christ, this is like the Adolescence of Utena all over again)

The plot and lyrics, fortunately, are a little more straightforward. The story follows Miku as she grapples with the concept of death, what it means to be human, and what that means for her as an AI. Think “The Disappearance of Hatsune Miku” but if that song lasted for an hour and a half. The only other characters in this are:

This strange looking bunny (I think?) who guides Miku while she’s in the throes of her existential crisis

and a constantly shapshifting humanoid creature that looks like what would happen if my sleep paralysis demon tried to cosplay as Miku but failed miserably

The music in this absolutely amazing, along with lyrics that hit super close to home to me. It’s kinda funny I found this piece of art now, as lately I’ve been forced to confront my own mortality following the recent death of my grandmother. The whole opera was both depressing and uplifting in a way I can’t exactly describe in words. I really recommend checking out for yourself if you’re curious. Overall I think it’s one of the best Vocaloid projects I have ever seen, so much so that I had to rant about it here.
