So the original script I have finished and am currently organising the filming of is a little controversial, subjects of God, religion, war and death are all covered the the piece treats them in a comedic fashion. I do not mean to offend people with this, simply put this is something written by me so my ideals and views are observed though the piece. While I do have a pretty big dig at religion and the people who follow it none of this is an attack simply an artistic choice. God portrayed in this piece is a massive prick, he is also not referenced as any particular God. The piece is simply a work of Absurdist humour.
So why am I talking about it? See something this is quite apparent at the moment especially over in that hive of scum and villainy called the US of A (sarcasm) is offensive material and warning people of things that could offend or as they are known trigger warnings. I want to give my two pence on these things so you know what to expect from me in the future. However my mind can change and I will be challenging my ideals constantly.
So offensive material huh? What are you talking about? Two examples I want to bring up first in this particular blog are the recent production of Julius Caesar which received an unworthy amount of controversy over the portrayal of a Trump style leader. So a few thing out the way. A) The death of Julius Caesar is a tragedy so those complaints of glamouring or endorsing violence against Trump are ridiculous. B) A theatre production is created by people those people are influenced by the world around them and their art demonstrates this. C) A piece of art can say what it wants you can judge its artistic value and moral value separately. In this case neither are of any significance, if you were offended you didn’t understand it. If you complained about it you don’t understand how art work. That’s very black and white but is how I see it. Just look at a similar production where Obama was Julius Caesar. Or any production of a play that looks at political themes there are so many examples of characters which are parody or inspired by real people, that’s how they express their point.
The second example I want to point out is the controversy over 13 Reasons Why. I didn’t like the show many people heralded it as a new frontier in writing teen age characters and making them real. I have to say I disagree, that’s not what I am discussing. Many of the themes discussed and shown is this show are “delicate” or “controversial”, discussing such themes as suicide and rape. A lot of backlash has been put against this show, claiming that it glamorises suicide and could be seen by someone at risk and encourage them to do so. This isn’t completely impossible. At risk people could be unstable enough to only see what they want out of the show. The writer and Netflix have defended the show and even if I don’t like it I will also defend its choice to talk and explore those themes. Netflix have added more messages warnings people of the content and a support page where they can find links to support or information about the themes discussed. Which is good, however with or without it I will defend the creative integrity of the artistic vision.
Trigger Warning culture can be seen as damaging and when it is taken to far I agree however I agree that it’s important and vital to give the audience information so they can make and informed decisions about what media they consume. I will be placing a warning in front of my video that it contains dark humour and discusses the themes of religion and god. Those who are easily offended can choose to watch or not simple but if I hadn’t put the warning in and they watched it, I agree that I wouldn’t move on the anything said or portrayed in the video, they have a right to be offended but instead of dealing with all of that putting a warning in the way saves me and that person time. While I wouldn’t put warning about something that is directly revealing about a plot if it’s the main crux of the twist I would put a warning that some may find the content upsetting or disturbing. But that’s a slightly more different and artistic arguement.
Just wanted to put this out there. I realise how offended some one could be after watching it but it’s a piece of comedy and is meant to be parodying and pointing out the ridiculousness of life, it’s not intended to be an attack but it if makes someone think then I will be more than happy. Kallum
