“ what do you want? ” the question was blunt and filled to the brim with exhaustion. she hadn’t had a moment for herself in days, her body ached, her mind buzzing. she wanted quiet, and hoped this conversation would be short lived.

“ hmph... i bet now you gonna bus’ out a pack of cards on me, yeah? ” ariel rolled her eyes and poured them their drink. “ no thanks. ”

blonde coils had begun to fall from the bun ariel had threw her hair in that morning, her makeup already beginning to feel a bit runny, and it was only noon. she sighed and glanced over at the other, tucking one of her runaway coils back into the mass. “ whatever it is, you’ve got to make it quick, ” she explained, fatigue obvious in her rasp. “ i’m on a time crunch. errands for Mister Bonham… ”
she looked up at them in disbelief, hurt and anger bubbling up inside of her. “ bite me... ” she hissed, her eyes turning red and the tears threatening.

“ um, what are you doing here right now? ”

the heat of the bodies all around the estate sent a sort of chill through ariel’s body. she didn’t mind when harvey threw parties, because he almost never let her work them (something possessive in him she assumed), but tonight was different. he hadn’t spoken to her about it, but on the list of names set to work the floor serving guests that night, her name was at the very top. she knew better than to argue or ask him why, so in her plain, black, waitress uniform, she served drinks to the throngs of her owner’s colleagues. she only met eyes when addressed, and took note on last names when she caught them. a few times, her eyes unintentionally met with a pair of sharp blue that held her in place... only to be distracted by another call for her service a moment later. hopefully this night would end soon.

the sun was resting comfortably on ariel’s skin, a soft, warm breeze accompanying it. if she closed her eyes she could imagine she was home, really home. the memory of waves crashing and birds calling... but truly it was never the same. she’d have to settle with the view of the fully bloomed cherry and apple trees for now. coming out to the garden was the only thing she really enjoyed about having to stay in that place. the other thing was being away from that vast and empty mansion, and that man... she missed her mother, with an ache that never really left her. ariel could hear footsteps nearing her and she turned to look and see who it might be. she recognized him, as one tended to recognize a neighbor or a stranger whose routine happened to sync with yours. she didn’t know his name. a smile came to her lips instinctively and she nodded a silent hello, whether he acknowledged her or not, then she looked away and locked her fingers together, breathing the warm air in deeply.
