Fear was adrenaline--the force that propelled a girl into a wave. She could fight or freeze and, though the small woman with salt rapidly fading from her hair had long maintained that there was ‘NOT A VIOLENT BONE IN MY BODY,’ she found herself fighting more than she’d thought she was capable of. It was more DESPERATION than violence, but Cosima doesn’t think the old, dead blood on her hands can make much of a distinction.

The man is far enough away when she spies him that she doesn’t worry about becoming ENTANGLED in the fight itself. The fight isn’t fair--one man pit against a few--and Cosima knows she can’t pass by for her own protection. Something in him calls to her; an already reeling gut tugging at her to act or she’d REGRET it. She’s afraid to shout out to him--maybe she’d fuck up his focus and so she acts instead, keeping a fair distance until less dead are still walking.

The gun NEVER feels right in her hands. It’s heavy and cumbersome and--more than anything--something she’d been so AGAINST before the world pulled the dead from their graves and made weapons of their putrefaction. Delicate hands don’t shake anymore, but she bites her lip to steady her nerves, which constrict and bite within her bones. A clumsy shot echoed in the open space as it made jelly of the walker’s brains--a bullet forcing itself into a new home. It was just one walker, but she hoped it was enough to turn the tide of the fight for the living man whose face looked as if it had been touched by death before.
