I love the idea of Grace occasionally habitually slipping into Rocky’s speech patterns, but I’m even more obsessed with the idea of Rocky (who likely had to modify his own language much more heavily for Grace and his translator to understand it) occasionally slipping into his “talking-to-Grace” pidgin around other Eridians.

Like, Rocky will come home one day and be like “Adrian have good day working on Grace habitat dome, question.”

And Adrian will just go, “Yes, dear. We’ve made some good progress on the lighting adjustments. I take it you paid the aforementioned Grace a visit this afternoon?”

And Rocky, switching back to standard Eridian speech patterns and positively dripping tonal indicators for affectionate sarcasm, is left to reply “However did you guess?”

(They both lose it laughing. This happens several times a week)

You can make any and every headcannon about Grace and Rocky arriving on Erid 200% funnier by imagining that they have their own Stratt who sent 20 something fellow eridians in space with no governmental authorization and they have to deal with the fact her plan worked AND aliens exist.

platonic strattland soulmate au. where kind of absolutely nothing changes about canon but they both know and it fucks both of them up even more.

i was already thinking about a sharing injuries one because my friend and i are making an aro rylark sharing injuries au, and like. applying that to strattland would be soooo so interesting.

they find it out via something inane like a paper cut or maybe in the process of kinda kidnapping grace he gets a little scraped up and they recognise it in each other or something but REGARDLESS, they dont tell anyone or even bring it up until that very last confrontation alone in stratt's office. this. doesn't change anything because stratt when she was chosen for this job decided that it came before anything. friendships, soulmates, anything. and so she sends him to space. and thats that. and if she is full of agonising grief too strong to feel any kind of hope or relief that the project is done then thats her business and there is no one she is required to share it with.

when yao's wife reports that he's dead, and ilyukhina's soulmate soon comes out to say the same thing, years before they were scheduled to arrive at tau ceti, global hope for the mission faltered, amd failed completely. because ryland grace did not have a soulmate, everyone knows that! but eva stratt never lost hope. people said it was a useless thread of hope she was clinging onto, to justify her life's work, but she knew. and she'd never share why.

when bruises began appearing all over her body and then severe burns on her arm, she felt fear at first but. hes not dead. hes not dead and hes doing something up there and her hope flares. she knew he was not dead and she had faith in his ability to complete the mission but here is proof. and so she waits patiently for those beetles to arrive. and when they do she is among the first to see them, to finally get the explanation of what she felt all those years ago, and why ryland grace is still not dead.

she has been starving for a very long time. her soulmate has not eaten properly in a very long time. but he is not dead.

Another thing in the movie that makes me wonder why they didnt have that in the book. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think I saw little plant saplings in the lab in the movie.

Why didn’t they give them Any kind of plants in the book?

First of all, it seems like having some kind of lifeform would be potentially useful for experiments. They obviously probably couldn’t send lab rats with them, but some seed packets really wouldn’t take very much space or weight at all. Biggest problem would be containers, and light, but I’m sure they could make it work in some way (such as the rack with built in lights in the movie). They gave them every single technological program ever JUST in case, so some seeds doesn’t seem like it would be that far of a stretch.

And second of all. It seems good to have *some* kind of backup food source. First of all, what if something goes wrong with the food stores while they’re in comas. I don’t think anything would go wrong with the coma slurry, since it’s just powder and water, but the actual food could have a power failure and rot or something. If they woke up to find the food is fucked, they could survive on the coma slurry and set up the farms with something fast-growing to get by.

And additionally, I mean they never seem to consider this at all, which is understandable because its practically a zero chance (though it ends up actually happening), but they’re sending three very smart people to a star system they don’t know anything about. Maybe they would find a way to refuel and come back home. So why not have a renewable food source like, just in case.

Anyways good job movieverse. Probably saved Ryan Gosling from some of the nutritional diseases he gets in the book. Probably why there’s a still young-ish looking Ryan Gosling on the planet not looking completely fucked up 💀

Stratt is the funniest bitch in the project on purpose. When she makes a joke she 100% meant to do that and she knows that it's the funniest shit ever, even if everyone is too intimidated to laugh.

Grace is the funniest bitch in the project by accident. He's used to being around kids so he's forgotten that filters are a thing and just says the first, dumbest joke that pops into his head. He has no control over it. Nobody makes him feel bad about it because they're afraid of what Stratt will do if they hurt his feelings.

Rocky is the funniest bitch on the Hail Mary because he's been alone in space for years and has probably gone insane, sane, and then insane again. He's 10-20% worried that Grace is just a vivid hallucination and treats him accordingly.

Considering when Eridians sleep they are completely paralyzed and vulnerable, I don't think any drugs were necessary! I think Grace is probably a little more hesitant about others watching him sleep now, though
