This One Song… Kiwi Jr on Clerical Sleep
Tell you what – we love hearing from artists when things go right. We equally love hearing from artists when things go dreadfully wrong. A song that was a piece of piss, written in 20 minutes? Kiwi Jr, 'Cooler Returns' LP (Kiwi Club/Sub Pop)
Thursday, November 4, 2021, 7:28pm (full listen)
Been meaning to properly listen to this band for ages, having a friend in their ranks and also being advised repeatedly that it would be up my alley. Well, I am pleased to report that is way, way, way up my alley, really great, and surprising in how much more I like it than I thought I would have. Vocals remind me of something I can't put my finger on (it'll come to me on future listens), music and production is much richer than I'd expected, with some very well-employed acoustic guitar usage, and the lyrics are those excellent type that come across as clever and interesting despite there being zero effort from this listener to discern any sort of "meaning"; this album is great and will receive many more spins.
