hi, how would you characterize the fonts/style used for the Cake album covers? specifically the albums Motorcade of Generosity, Comfort Eagle, and Prolonging the Magic.
The overall style is grunge or DIY. It's designed to look like it was made cheaply and carelessly. In fact, the inconsistency of the text on Motorcade of Generosity makes me think it was probably typed on an actual typewriter.
The Cake logo is in Copperplate Gothic (circa 1903) [Fonts In Use · Identifont].
The typewriter font looks like IBM Elite [Fonts In Use], one of the standard fonts for IBM typewriters.
I'm not sure exactly when Elite was first released, but it was already being described as "the most popular type face through the years" in 1955.
The title on the spine on this release is in a version of Courier (circa 1955) [Fonts In Use], specifically ParaType Courier (1990) [Identifont], though there's other releases where it's the same as the front cover.
Prolonging the Magic uses the same overall style, but different individual fonts.
"Prolonging the Magic" is in Dorchester Script (1938) [Fonts In Use · Identifont].
The typewriter font this time is the digital font LTR NCND (formerly FF Trixie; 1991) [Fonts In Use · Identifont]. It doesn't have the inconsistencies that Motorcade of Generosity has.
Comfort Eagle uses the same fonts as Prolonging the Magic.
