the last kingdom timeline

for anyone who needs it, here it is!! i used wikipedia as a basis for my facts (forgive me) so it may not be accurate but i attempted to compare canon events with the real events in history and then merged them together to make an appropriate timeline. this will make 0 sense to anyone who is not me but go off i guess!!

alfred was born in the year 849. he marries when he is 19 in 868. he and aelswith have their first child, aethelflaed, in 870 when he is 21. he becomes king in 871 when he is 22. he rules for roughly 30 years and dies at age 50 in 899.

in tv canon, let us assume that uhtred and alfred are the same age (since he is not 15 when he meets alfred for the first time). that means uhtred is roughly age 22 in early season 1.

the battle of ethandun (historically recorded as the battle of edington) happened in 878. by this time alfred is age 29, therefore uhtred is also age 29 if we are still assuming he is the same age as alfred in tv canon. therefore season 1 lasts roughly 7 years.

in season 2 we see aethelflaed bloom into a young lady of marriageable age and aethelred makes his debut. facts say that alfred saw them married sometime in the mid-880s. this was halfway through season 2 so accounting for the time passed between seasons 1 and 2, episode 1 to episode 5 can be at most 7 years, again. uhtred is therefore 36 by that time.

if wikipedia’s facts are to be trusted, the wiki states that a dane named haisten (read: haesten), in joint alliance with another army, caused trouble for alfred in 894. if we are to equally divide the time between when this happens in season 3 (around episode 7) and when aethelred and aethelflaed married in season 2, we can assume that season 2 was roughly 10 years (if it ended in 889-890 and we add the three years to the seven we have already calculated) and season 3 is already at 4 years. alfred dies in 899 so if we assume it begins in the year 890, season 3 lasted for 9 years. that means uhtred is by now 49, give or take a year since alfred died at 50.

edward ascends the throne in 899 but we can’t account for the time passed between seasons 3 and 4. however if aethelred died in 911 (according to history), that means season 4 already encompasses 12 years halfway through. no events in the rest of tv canon translate directly into history so this is as far as the timeline extends. uhtred is 62.

overall the last kingdom has so far encompassed 42 years of history. by the end of season 4 uhtred should be 62 years old and aethelflaed 44 (she’s 20 years younger than him) just to put things in perspective. alfred has been dead for 12 years.

to account for book canon, simply subtract 7 years off of uhtred’s age for whatever season you want.
