tagged by @cordeliaflyte to post my current On Repeat playlist, thank you! I need a distraction, so I thought I'd write a little about the songs too.
The Boxer- 2002 Remaster {Emmylou Harris}-> One of my favorite songs, and one of my favorite covers of it. Also, Emmylou Harris' voice is in my range, so it's very easy for me to sing along and it makes me feel so good! I first listened to it properly a few weeks ago and it's been on repeat since. Best places to listen to it: in your brother's childhood bedroom, while sewing
Hot and Heavy {Lucy Dacus} -> I really like this song and the driving rhythm of it and the nostalgic/melancholy/affectionate/awkward emotion of it. Another favorite, and another one I love to sing along to. I listened to this when her album came out this past summer, and it's the first song on the album, and holy shit, is it a strong start to Home Video. I listened to Hot and Heavy and then couldn't listen to any of the songs beyond it for a while, because I was still deeply feeling my feelings about this one. Best places to listen to it: on the steps of a church at dusk, in the car with your dear friend
This is the Life {Amy Macdonald} -> The beat, the rolling lyrics, and Amy Macdonald's haunting voice make this a favorite! And that's not to mention how the lyrics put a pinhole in my twenty-something heart, because I'm living my life as best I can and it's beautiful and wild and lonely and treacherous. Best places to listen to it: right after realizing your feelings for someone, while getting ready for a party in your shared bedroom
I am not a woman, I'm a god {Halsey} -> Makes me feel badass. Super strong beat and powerful vocals/lyrics. I listen to this song and it improves my mood right away. Best places to listen to it: while power-walking to class, while dancing on your own
SHUM {Go-A} -> Слава Україні! A really catchy and badass and beautiful song, plus it celebrates Ukraine and also the coming of spring. It brightens my day and makes me want to dance, this song. Also, white voice singing style is SO pleasing to my ear. Best places to listen to it: while lying on the couch and rallying yourself, while hemming the costumes for a show that's in three days.
First Time {Lucy Dacus} -> Have I mentioned how much I love the Home Video album? Definitely another one of my favorite songs of hers. This song also hits the sweet spot of melancholy and nostalgia and affectionate remembering and the fraying, electric anxiety of being young and living your life. The more I listen to this song, the more I see myself in it-- especially with regard to Where did we go right? I think about it all the time... Best places to listen to it: on the train while on the way to visit friends, while falling asleep on an airplane in the dark
On Your Way (Felix Song) {Anaïs Mitchell} -> Anaïs Mitchell, my beloved! I love this album too, and especially this song. Anaïs wrote this song about a specific person whom I'll never know, but I don't mind, because the emotion and love that comes out of this song goes right to my heart, plus the message it gives about no regrets and no mistakes, you get one take, you're on your way... Best places to listen to it: laying in bed listening to the rain in the dark, while sitting outside in the grass and the cold air and thinking.
Jinx {Lia Pappas-Kemps} -> A pretty, emotionally affecting little song. It especially pulls at my heart when Lia sings, all soft and sweet and longing, Can't you see the future? You can make me breakfast, I'll be extroverted and you'll be introspective, when the world is quiet, I can hear you thinking, God I think I love you, I don't wanna jinx it. Because, well...yeah. Best places to listen to it: sitting on the floor daydreaming, having it come on the radio at work while your playlist is on shuffle and listening to the song play out while you pull out your tape measure at try to focus.
Hard Times Come Again No More {The Longest Johns} -> Uplifting, easy to sing along to, and really damn hopeful. This song is like medicine. We're going to get through this! Best places to listen to it: while doing laundry, while stretching in the dance studio and centering yourself.
Kissing Lessons {Lucy Dacus} -> A hat trick for my girl Lucy. Another nostalgic, melancholy, fast-moving tune. I especially like it because I remember being that little girl feeling love for other little girls and not knowing where to put it. Also, Lucy released the song when I was in the midst of designing for a play that had strong themes of being young and in love and closeted and confused. I think it was meant to be. Best places to listen to it: in a darkened theatre late at night, while in the library watching the sun rise.
